Evil Dead Rise was a two pack of ass. Skip it and watch the far superior 2013 reboot again instead. This was cheap direct to DVD (or Hulu now I guess) quality dreck.

I said it before, I'll say it again. Evil Dead without Ash is not Evil Dead.
Its just a generic horror/slasher.
Ash makes it.
Now....shop smart...shop S-MART!

But is it Ash without Bruce Campbell?

A bit dated but …
Watched Dungeons & Dragons tonight with my boys. Went in with low expectations and zero knowledge of the game or lore.
It was awesome.
Super fun and well done.
Would definitely recommend.

It's honestly baffling that prime Bruce Campbell didn't become a Harrison Ford level star. He absolutely could have been an A-list lead based on his looks, charisma, comedic chops, and overall acting abilities.

Hollywood is a strange and unknowable place. Especially considering that everyone seemed to love him. Raimi even went out of his way to make sure he got Cameo roles wherever he could.
Whatever else was going on though? I couldnt tell you.
Hell, even the TV show 'Ash vs. The Evil Dead' was ridiculous, preposterous and just flat out stupid and I loved it.
If someone proposed a Bruce Campbell/Jack Black buddy comedy film I would be the first in line to buy tickets.

Garbage movie really. And get this. Spoiler (not a bad one; you won't ruin the movie looking at this):
Anyway, 3/10. Don't bother.

Suffering thru this #### now. What an awful movie. Its boring as #### and I don't care what happens to any of these people.
And yes, I loved the first three Indiana Jones movies. The last crusade is probably one of my top 5 movies. This is pure garbage

The first half an hour of BTTF is ####ing bananas and I can’t imagine what audiences were thinking when they first saw it.
The opening scene with the giant speaker is hilarious and totally random and immediately sets the tone for the movie. But then it quickly changes to a John Hughes movie vibe for his school day. Then, boom, we get plutonium, Lybians and murder. At this point it’s like wtf am I watching?
I get trailers and other marketing existed in the 80s, but still, until he goes back it feels like a movie that’s gonna go off the rails at any minute. Hell, when Doc gets murdered it feels like it has gone off the rails. What happened to the lighthearted teen comedy from 5 minutes ago?
But the minute he’s in ‘55, it all works perfectly.

I actually had to tell someone to turn off their phone during Indy at Chinook last week.
So ####ing distracting having that bright white screen in your peripheral, first time I let it go, second time I let it go, third time I stood up and told him to shut it off. I hate having to do that, put me in a bad mood and takes me out of enjoying the movie.
I don't know what this idiot was doing but it's so pathetic that you can't respect others around you and you can't control that little gerbil brain from tapping away at your phone for even a 10 min time span.

As for PWB in Indy, I didn't care for her character, which was a problem for the movie. How much of that is her fault is hard to say, but I didn't leave the theater convinced that someone else couldn't have done it better. She did seem like a genuinely potential adventurer, someone physically capable, quick witted etc, which for example is something Ana de Armas (a really hot actor) couldn't sell me on in Ghosted. (There's an example of a recent movie that didn't succeed based on the "let's make sure the actors are super hot" formula.) I think the problem was more that the chemistry between her character and Indy wasn't interesting. It felt like the movie had two protagonists with very different vibes. I would absolutely watch a cheesy adventure movie with PVB as the lead.
They should've probably given her character a love interest in the movie. The kid was fine but didn't really add anything, I would much rather have some bumbling but lovable archeology student in his place. These movies usually had someone bumbling around Indy for light comedy, I think that's another element they mostly missed.
EDIT: The movie also could have used that more incompetent/normal character who's alternately impressed, flabbergasted and shocked by the shenanigans of the main characters. If we're talking about movie formula stuff they didn't use here, that's another thing left out.
|
It's easy to say what you believe they should've done differently to make it a better movie, but if you or I wrote it we know deep down that it would be an atrocity by comparison. Execution/translation of those ideas to the screen is a skill in itself and what we actually got was a fine adventure film and a definite uptick from KotCS. You just can't make Indy films like the old days with Ford eclipsing 80. So you have to go about it differently to accommodate for that while still finding ways to make it engaging and fun. I thought they did well all things considered.
Internet armchair directors/scriptwriters are becoming the new thing nowadays, and I think they might be the most smug of their kind, and probably vastly overrate their real world script writing/directing chops.
But especially the super fans who believe they know what's best for the franchise over the creators. We don't have to like or enjoy everything put out these days, but pretending like we can do better with zero experience orchestrating everything that goes on behind the scenes is always laughable.
Why don't we just sit down and enjoy this film someone else created and take it as it is rather than spending it dreaming up alternate movies that would satisfy our precise, subjective personal tastes.

Pretty well said, that might be at the crux of what's annoying me with these recent bad Indy reviews.
None of these youtube critics have written a script or a screenplay, they have no respect for what a craft it is and how anyone at the level to be working on a project like this has put in their 10,000 hours a few times over. They sure know how to make ####ty graphics and say everything sucks though.
Accept a film for what it is, the product of a group of writers, directors and producers, at that specific time, that is their creative vision. Sometimes it will be fine, but sometimes a film will hit in all the right ways and become one of your absolute favorites.
But yes, #### these incel youtube critics. : )

This seems to suggest that all criticism isn’t warranted. Sometimes the creative process is really a process driven by focus groups and marketing department creating the Homer Simpson car of tomorrow devoid of any sort of artistry. That should be called out.
