Seriously, I think that we should just offer to let him renegotiate NAFTA (again) in 2025 instead of 2026. On condition that all tariffs are paused during negotiations. That will get him a kind of "win" now (escalating the renegotiations) and spare everyone the short-term disruptions.

I think Trump is just hooked on the feeling of power he gets from making threats that he's imposing something in days/weeks, even though he's likely not prepared to actually follow through on putting them into effect with how much of a trainwreck it'll be for America.

I like that approach, however the chaos surrounding tariffs and the duration thereof, even if he doesn't end up eventually applying them has a significant impact. The point of all this might actually be the chaos and uncertainty itself. Since he ramped up the tariff talk, essentially no business that has a choice of jurisdiction for investment has chosen to invest materially in Canada or Mexico. So investment is essentially drying up abroad all the while American businesses have been able to stock up on essential inventories of imported inputs to their businesses and consumers haven't had to pay higher prices for imports. So in a way simply just the limbo of the turmoil favours what he's trying to accomplish.
