Anyone catch "Asteroid City" over the weekend? I went Fri night at Chinook, theater was absolutely packed, Wes Anderson fans were quite eager.
Very enjoyable, feels like I was smiling throughout the entire movie. It's not my favorite but if you you like his films you'll enjoy it. Delivering that type of dialogue has to be incredibly difficult, I found myself appreciating the cast. I gotta do some research into how he films his stuff, I think he uses miniatures more than we realize. Such a quirky, unique look. Oh, it's gets a bit meta, stepping out of the story more than he's done in the past. Would recommend.
We were going to go this weekend but plans changed. I love Anderson's movies and am excited to see this.
Ha! That's great, will watch tonight for sure. The damn train is what started me thinking of miniatures but I wasn't sure while watching, it used to be obvious in the 80s and even 90s but not anymore.

I'm as big of a Wes Anderson fan as you get and I thought this was a HUGE miss. A few cute scenes and characters, and yes, production design is great as always, but it was ultimately the most meaningless story he's ever done. Nothing happened, nothing changed, nothing mattered. Nobody was interesting or likable, and I didn't care about anything that happened. It's like he tried to give a 5 minute movie to every character instead of just executing a story about 2 or 3 of them. Extensive plot devices to break the 4th wall that amounted to nothing and just confused the narrative. Not even great score or soundtrack this time.
It's the first time I've ever seen one of his films and simply did not care for it at all. Others have had flaws but were ultimately redeeming, but this one was a hot mess. I hate to say it since he's one of my favorite filmmakers, but this was just a bad film.
It could be intentional on Anderson's part since much of the film discussed the process of writing and creating a show, but it didn't come across clearly that it was intentional. Perhaps the best quote I read in a review came from O'Sullivan of WaPo:
Quote:
Maybe the whole endeavor is some kind of self-portrait of an artist who doesn’t know what he wants to say anymore.

Finally got around to watching Troll 2, and I have to say, it's up there with The Room for the best worst movie ever. It's so insane and terrible but in all the best ways. I dare anyone to watch and not laugh at least once......You can't piss on hospitality

A timeless quote from a timeless film.

If you haven't already, I recommend watching the documentary "Best Worst Movie", all about the making of this film and the cult following that it developed over time. It's a fun watch.

I enjoyed Dial of Destiny. A proper sequel and send off. Glad they got the 4th Indy movie right this time.
I liked it as well. It’s not as good as the original trilogy, which will never be topped in my opinion. But it’s definitely an improvement over Crystal Skull. The overall tone was pretty spot on, and I enjoyed some of the big action set pieces.
I thought Harrison Ford was terrific in his final performance as Indy, and he had a couple of emotional moments that hit me right in the feels. It felt like a proper and loving farewell to the character. And Phoebe Waller-Bridge made a great side-kick.

No complaints with the new Indy, fun watch. I enjoyed it for what it was and was not completely invested in the direction they chose. Seems to be a lot of online complaining about Waller-Bridge, I didn't agree. The plot did seem out there but not after you remember what takes place in previous installments.
After rewatching all the previous Indy movies last week I have a new appreciation for Harrison Ford. There are small things he does that I realize are what sold that character to us during those first 3 movies. Reactions, inflections and not just the huge charismatic stuff.
Will likely catch it again before the theater run is over!

I liked the new Indy too! And I'm glad that I did. It wasn't quite on par with the originals (didn't expect it to be) but it was certainly better than Kingdom! Which is what I was hoping for.
I was worried with early reviews, so much so that I was dreading a character assasination going in, and came out pleasantly surprised. No shame was brought upon the indy legacy, even with time travel factoring into this installment.
There were heavy complaints about Phoebe Waller Bridge in the early reviews, but aside from a couple self felating remarks (about being beautiful and self reliant, or something to that effect) she was a fine if not flawed character, who did show character growth. There were always a lot of con artists, thieves and shady, two-timing types in the indy films. It's all part of what actually makes them enjoyable. Some critics made her out to be the devil, or something.
I don't know if we have highly strung incel types taking over the movie critic scene or something but I don't understand the backlash in this case whatsoever.
Anyways. I had a fun time! They only dropped the ball with some late fan servicing that felt out of place but I think they got most of it right.
The de-aged scenes were vintage indy and I thoroughly enjoyed those.
Harrison turned in a great performance despite bring a 79-80 year old centering an action adventure film. It's evident he has a lot of passion for the character.

Spoiler!
If you're talking about the Raiders call-back during the final scene with Marion, I honestly loved that part and I thought it was beautifully acted by both Ford and Karen Allen.

Jesus. I didn't realize that anyone had anything even slightly bad to say about her. I thought she was an absolutely perfect choice for the role. Cheeky yet affable, has that right amount of attitude and adventure-seeking. I like the fact that her character wasn't purely good. It fits that world better.
Being as that she's written some strong female characters as well as played them on screen, I imagine there is a significant incel thing happening here, which bums me out. She's an amazing talent, it's ridiculous that they can't see that.
For the record, I loved the film, and while I don't consider it to be part of the essential trilogy, it's a very, very good addition. I'd highly recommend.

The set pieces, characters, and dialogue were all top notch Anderson staples. I would say the story lacked a bit, as mentioned previously, that held it back from the best Anderson movies. But it certainly wasnt the worst (which, if you like Wes Anderson, is still very good)

Totally agree.
And yeah, unfortunately I read/watched a few of these reviews beforehand which lowered my expectations. But these guys were completely out to lunch (and yes, they were all males to no surprise). Thought she was the perfect companion for an aging Indy, keeping him on his toes throughout and providing him an intellectual equal.
The movie would be nowhere near as good if she was written in the way that these particular critics wanted..

After watching the new Indiana Jones I went on youtube to check a few reviews, now my recommended clips are full of negative reviews with ridiculous and exaggerated graphics and titles. Cartoony bull#### with thumbs down, etc. I think I'm with you, these are weird incel types who just want to be pissed off because there is a new female character.

Saw it. Boring AF. Not one single laugh in the entire packed theater the entire time.
The main chick was lame and not nearly hot enough to carry a movie.
Old Indy was fine, I guess, but kinda dull and depressing and not loveable like in many of the other movies.
Garbage movie really. And get this. Spoiler (not a bad one; you won't ruin the movie looking at this):
Spoiler!
It is ####ing pathetic in 2023 you have a rooftop train fight between good guy and bad guy where the train goes through a series of tunnels and the bad guy finally gets bopped off the train because he forgot to lay down for one of the tunnel openings. Like...that is so pathetically unoriginal. What a joke. I audibly scoffed at that.
Anyway, 3/10. Don't bother.
