I’m not sure why anyone is surprised that Gaudreau is maximizing his leverage considering how negotiations for his last contract went.

I hope this is what he is doing. Maximizing his value while still signing in Calgary.

...but something just doesn't feel right about this. If Johnny was strongly leaning towards Calgary, I feel like it would have gotten done prior to the draft so that Tree could have got to work on improving the team during one of the busier periods of transactions in the league.

Lewis Gross may have thought the same thing when he tried to sign Johnny’s extension in 2016. Get it done before camp so Johnny can get back to the city and prepare for the season with his teammates but it only got done when they caved on the Flames offer. They had no leverage other than going to Europe as Johnny couldn’t even sign an offer sheet.

Now the tables have flipped significantly and Gross is working to use all the leverage they have acquired to get the absolute best deal for Johnny. The Flames are screwed they have no other option but hoping to sign Johnny and if not the team is going to be left in a terrible spot. They can squeeze the team for maximum $, full NMC, the best bonuses, lockout/buyout proof they can get it all.

If they don’t sign gaudreau and they miss out on plan B’s because they are focusing on him it could be a disaster for the Flames

Will be very interesting to see what happens next week.

Did he use the words "a chance" or is that LeBrun paraphrasing?
That's not promising wording

“a chance”, “still trying”.

Not looking good at all.

Without knowing what Brad actually said, it’s hard to read too much into this. Could be LeBrun asked, “Is there still a chance you sign Johnny before Wednesday?” and the answer was “yes.”

He’s putting the team in a position where they will have no choice but to give him what he wants, I don’t think he wants to leave to me it seems that he’s just not interested in taking a discount to stay which I don’t think is unreasonable given how his last contract extension went.

Now that treliving either wasn’t able to or chose not make any moves at the draft the team is more pot committed to signing Johnny which is only going to increase what he gets from them in the end.

I am sure Mangiapane will do the same thing. Didn't Treliving nickel and dime him too? While signing other washed up players.

This GM took every ounce of advantage when he could. Now, these players don't owe him anything.

You’re grasping. Like Leo DiCaprio in Titanic.

It has nothing to do with whether I think Johnny re-signs. I’m pointing out it’s not a direct quote.
