WB is in the process of getting rid of TCM, which is a terrible shame as it's a great resource for classic movies and also great insight into older movies and recommendations to watch. I know I've used it a bunch lately looking for older movies to watch. WB continues it's downward slide, this year is it's 100th anniversary and frankly at this rate they won't make 110.

Watched 2001 A Space Odyssey for the first time, what a trip. I had been putting it off because of the reputation of the movie,I was thinking how can it live up to the hype? I loved it, it's an enthralling movie, but I feel like I have to see it a couple more times to get all the themes and fully understand and appreciate it. Everyone who is a fan of cinema needs to give it a watch at least once.
One thing that's crazy is it's 55 years old and looks lightyears better than any movie currently out in theatres. I have no idea how Kubrick shot some of those scenes. This thing has aged like fine wine, I have a hard time believing many films from today will captivate audiences in 2078.

I’ve got to make sure I’m awake and try that one again. I was bored and turned it off.

I highly recommend reading the book, it'll help you understand a lot more of the movie.
I've read the entire series. Cant go wrong because I find the movie to be fantastic, if a little nebulous, the book sprinkles some extra flavour on it.

2001 is definitely at a slower pace than most movies, but I found that when things were happening it made me more invested in it.
I watched the 4K release and the film looks incredible, and it also has the overture at the beginning of the film and the intermission included.
I will have to check out the books, thanks Locke, what about the sequel is it any good?

Yeah, Arthur C. Clarke was one of the greats. I read so much of his stuff when I was a kid. There are books I can't even remember the plot lines of, but I still have images in my mind from how they inspired my imagination.

My Dad loved 2001, and I remember watching it with him and I might have been just a bit too young? I cant really say because I dont know how old I was when I watched it, but thinking 10-12?
It was one of his favourite movies.
So then I read the book, some lightbulbs came on, and we watched it together again and it just made so much more sense.
Not saying that you have to, but at that age it clued me in to some context that I otherwise missed.

The work of two genius-level artists combined: Clarke and Kubrick. Not sure you can get any better than that.

2001 is a lot of fun to watch with people who are seeing it for the first time, because their reaction at the end is always the same: slow head-turn, jaw hanging down and loudly asking "what the F--K was that about?!"

41 years ago today, two of my all time favorite movies released on the exact same day.....The Thing and Blade Runner. Those movies also had to compete against ET and Star Trek 2 which were both already in theatres. Out of the 4, which one are you watching in theatres?

The Thing is a blind spot I really need to fix.
The Metro Cinema here did a surprise screening last night and it turned out to be Velvet Goldmine, which I had first seen like 7 years ago. Having known what it was now I really dug it. (Previously I thought it was more a straight bio pic like movie)

Anyone catch "Asteroid City" over the weekend? I went Fri night at Chinook, theater was absolutely packed, Wes Anderson fans were quite eager.
Very enjoyable, feels like I was smiling throughout the entire movie. It's not my favorite but if you you like his films you'll enjoy it. Delivering that type of dialogue has to be incredibly difficult, I found myself appreciating the cast. I gotta do some research into how he films his stuff, I think he uses miniatures more than we realize. Such a quirky, unique look. Oh, it's gets a bit meta, stepping out of the story more than he's done in the past. Would recommend.
