I was just thinking the other day how unique and satisfying an experience it is to dislike or otherwise flat out hate a popular and/or well reviewed film.

There's an odd, self-gratifying feeling knowing that something is garbage while the seals clap and bark at the next installment of hot trash they all line up to see. It's like the power of knowing something the majority of people don't and you have all the opportunity in the world to revel in it even for just a little while. It's that sudden realization of "I didn't know I was better than you".

I can see why conspiracy theorists get off on this kind of self-importance and I understand why Sliver seems to delight in gleefully cluster bombing review threads with such vigorous hyperbole.

With that said, Dune suuuuuuuuucks.

I like it better when you are the only one on earth who loves a movie that everyone else hates.

Saw it twice in theatres, and bought a bootleg Blu Ray from Europe.

It's fine to dislike something. But I also can't stand people who can't admit that some popular things are also good. You can like a French avant garde short film and the Avengers. It's okay.

I watch movies and enjoy or not enjoy them according to my own actual viewing and experience of the movie. It doesn't matter to me if a movie is popular or well reviewed. That fact might drive me to watch a particular movie, but it doesn't dictate my enjoyment.

I've definitely had inner dialogue or dialogue with others when my enjoyment of a movie is different than the masses, to try and understand a different perspective, but it ultimately doesn't matter to me.

Never saw it. The whole boring thing seems like it was better off left on a page.

I wish people would stop conflating taste with quality. They’re not the same thing.

You can but most people who like the one thing probably aren’t going to like the other.

I mean you can live your days worrying about whether people who are deeply into Free Jazz or Norwegian Death Metal can admit that Taylor Swift is actually great and enjoyable or you can just acknowledge that maybe they actually just don’t like it.

This is the problem. People generally go

"I don't like it, therefore it's terrible and nobody should like it"

instead of

"I don't like it, but that's my personal taste and not indicative of the quality of the product"
