Should the Flames decide to trade Andersson for futures I think that you could see them fill this gap in the free agency market on one and two year deals.

Players like:
  • Tyler Myers
    Brady Skjei
    Tyson Barrie
    Matt Dumba

I'd likely scratch Skejei off that list, he's going to get more money and term than we'd probably want to swallow.

I think both Dumba and Myers are real possibilities though on a 1-2 year contract.

Matt Dumba would be a good pickup. Shouldn’t cost too much in terms of AAV or term. Can play in the top 4 if need be. Is from the area. Plays physical.

Out of that list Barrie would be the best option with a one year deal. You can pump and dump him, we need the PP help.

Myers likely re-signs in Vancouver at a heavy discount

Skjei would be a fool NOT to sign a 7 year deal (this is his most important contract to sign in his career), probably looking at high 40’s/low 50’s million dollar deal

Dumba is a decent signing too I guess, but I’d honestly rather have Miromanov work through being in a top 4 spot.

Barrie has always sorta felt like a foregone conclusion to me.

Put Kakko with backlund and he'll get ~160 points. In all seriousness though, I do find we underestimate how much Backlund helps players find their footing, and a young, underperforming person (Kakko or anyone who comes to mind) might need backs. tldr, backs = good

This would be a no brainer from Flames end I would think. Ras for #6. Utah gets a now piece, flames draft a dman of the future. Done deal, Who adds? RH first pair dmen dont come cheap.

Could Andersson + 41st overall be enough to get that pick?

Utah's going to make a big splash both at the draft and in free agency.

I highly doubt they are trading that pick.

Wonder if someone like Utah then makes a play for Ekblad. Florida would probably love to re-sign Reinhart, and maybe Montour, too.

True. From Utah’s perspective, what other defencemen could be available in trade for that pick that are as good or better than Andersson? Especially if you include his contract which is very reasonable and has 2 years left on it.

I suppose any defencemen with only 1year left on their deal could potentially sign an extension with Utah almost immediately after being traded so that might make trading for them over Andersson a better option if it means they have a player for 8 years instead of just 2.

No. I doubt Utah would do 28th pick , Anderson for that pick. I sure as hell wouldn’t trade that pick for soon to be 28 year old Anderson. If I’m Utah and trading that pick it’s got to be a big name coming back in trade.

I don't understand what bigger name they could get than Andersson? What kind of player are they expecting?

For some reason my brain keeps telling me that the Flames will end up drafting Roger McQueen in 2025.

Anderson is not a big name

If the Flames traded 6th overall for the 28th overall and a 28 year old #2 defensemen that is cost controlled for only 2 years, fans would be pissed. And rightfully so.
