finally caught up on "Mildred Pierce", good movie but really elevated by Joan Crawford's performance.

Have you seen the hbo miniseries? I’ve meant to watch it forever but never got around to it.

I haven't but I was looking into it last night. I think I will in a little bit once the movie has settled a bit more. Sounds like it follows the novel a little closer.

Recently watched two excellent but completely different films:
John Wick: Chapter 4: My favourite in the series really taking things to the next level. I loved the action in the first three but the story elements were hit and miss. This one had a great story and really expanded the universe while adding interesting characters. Having Bill Skarsgard and especially Donny Yen helped. The action is of course brilliant with plenty of well choreographed gun fu in interesting environments. The last hour is especially excellent with a great ending that solves the problem of how to provide a climax when the entire film is turned up to 11. We even get a bit of an emotional character arc for John Wick and if they weren't going to keep making more this would have been a satisfying conclusion. The best action movie since Fury Road. 10/10
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story: Hilarious. From the early scene with the police telling Al's parents he was found at a polka party playing the accordion I knew this would be something special. Just a brilliant parody of a biopic that had me laughing from start to finish. Also has enough nuggets of truth with all the classic songs to feel like a legitimate tribute to his career. Daniel Radcliffe is excellent and so is Evan Rachael Wood. Filled with great cameos too. Only criticism is this is too short and left me wanting more. Early contender for best comedy of the 2020s. 10/10

The movie was really good! Like better than I expected. The cast was great, it was funnier than expected. I would highly recommend. I actually had no idea that it was a Canadian made movie (duh).
Also, would recommend watching a movie at the plaza. It's old school with modern elements (and a cocktail bar). Don't go there for a blockbuster, but a movie like this is perfect.
|
Ya I love the re-opening of the plaza (in Kensington, not Inglewood ). Somewhat biased as it's just steps from home. Having a beer with the movie is nice, though I do wish they would have redone the seating.
Have yet to try their cocktails though -- are they any good??
As for movies: I re-watched Dark Waters tonight and I think it packs an even heavier punch on the second watch-through when you know where it's going. Also, have some non-stick frying pans to throw out

I don't take comic book movies too seriously and don't get overly critical with them, Flash was enjoyable and fun. The only thing that threw me was watching Ezra Miller while knowing what a f'ing lunatic he is, well the CGI was also strange.
Watched Boyz in the Hood & Menace to Society yesterday, great double feature and just as good as I remember.

I'm not a comic book movie guy, but I do want to see it just for Michael Keaton's Batman.

Watched Avatar: The Way of Water on Disney+ over three one hour sessions last week. Really enjoyed it - the visual effects are astonishing even on TV, it's nice that Disney+ streams in 4K. I liked it more than the first, though the whole plot in the end really didn't accomplish much of anything.
My big complaint would be the guy they got to play Spider, the human kid/teen who hangs with the Na'vi. His performance was terrible, and it was probably one of the more challenging performances of the movie that could've actually used a little nuance. Took me out of every scene he was in.

Watched Blackberry yesterday. It was a pretty great movie. They didn’t represent Balsillie all that accurately apparently but entertaining none the less.

Saw Transformers on Friday. I've hated all the Transformers movies, but I hate all superhero movies even more, so this was the only film I hadn't yet seen. This one was good and the ending is awesome.

The Boogeyman was pretty decent. I like it when horror movies don't phone in the third act or the child casting/acting (a common sin of smaller horror productions). Both were surprisingly strong. Some inventive scares.
RRR was a goldmine of cinematography and visual effects. Some amusing over the top laughs and an authentic bromance carry the movie (a colonial brit challenging indian guys to a dance-off was particularly enjoyable - what a bozo). It's too bad that like many bollywood films the script writing felt like it went off the first draft and didn't get near the the same love as the rest of the production. Plot threads were dropped and picked up on a whim with no real thought towards how that would be received by the viewer. Too bad, but still much fun to be had even at a 3 hour runtime.

That kid must have some connected parents, because there's no way he should have made it out of initial casting for such a huge movie

Watched it last weekend as well, and while I enjoyed it [Spider didn’t work for me either) it just kept going. Way too long for a movie night. I can’t see scrolling through the movie list and picking it again due to the time commitment

I tried watching it last weekend, but I was just bored and completely uninterested by the half hour mark and quit.
Technically good, but kind of uninspired visually, just well made versions of nothing new, and the story was already starting to annoy me. Just not a movie for me.

I watched " The Dunwich Horror" earlier this week.
I didn't hate it. It has some really interesting craft aspects in what is a loose adaptation of one of the Cthulhu Mythos stories, with a dash of "Rosemary's Baby".

Unpopular opinion, but I thought Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was disappointing. It was so visually stimulating that I was overwhelmed at times. Perhaps trying to focus on the minutia and easter-eggs wasn't a good idea, but either way it was a bit distracting to digest.
And it was long. Far too long to simply be the set-up for a sequel. The first thing I heard as the credits rolled was someone saying the same thing and their entire group agreeing. The film was just starting to round into something interesting and then it ended.
And maybe it was the theatre I was in, but I don't remember the framerate of the first film being so stuttering. Possible I'm misremembering, but it felt herky-jerky. I know the sound was off as the action and sound effects were drowning out the dialogue, of which I probably missed 20% or so. Very well could have been the theatre.
It was ok. The shine of the innovative animation had worn off for me so the quality and structure of the story were more important, which I didn't feel they hit on. Pacing was poor, they tried to wow with animation and overdid it, and the story felt bloated for a Part 1 of 2.
I'd still recommend it, but maybe do a better job of tempering your expectations than I did.

I don't have kids, so I'll put it on my list under "laugh riot".
