It's unremarkable. Many better options in that area.

Prices are insane this year. I think I paid $125 to walk Bearspaw last week.

Does it seem like there's less pressure on tee sheets? I wonder if these high prices are courses that are kind of over doing it and thinking demand is where it was a couple years ago.

Demand is still there from what I can see. Cottonwood went up from around $5k for a membership pre Covid to over $15k this year. The T sheet is as busy as I’ve ever seen it; weekends are booked solid and Wednesday men’s night is so ridiculously overbooked they went to 5 player groups and 9 minute spacing.

Wow, that Wednesday sounds both insane and terrible at the same time. Is that $15k for dues or what's happening there?

$15k is for the membership, then $4500 a year in dues.
5 player groups isn’t TOO bad, as long as members are all on the same page pushing the pace. Last week was just under 4 1/2hrs.

Demand is definitely up, my mens league filled up so quick some guys that were in it for 20 years consecutively missed out unfortunately. Max of 160 guys.
And apparently its the same thing in the ladies league, completely full.
This is all at the Strathmore course mind you.

Haven’t had any issues with tee times this year. But I’m not a member anywhere.

I don't have any issues getting tee times as a single, but 3 or 4 can be a bit tougher. There's basically no point whatsoever even trying to get a slot for more than 2 people at a reasonable time (i.e. between 9am and 4pm) at Lynx Ridge, Winston or Inglewood on a weekend, for example.

Those courses it’s by design. Maximize for members and fill whatever openings there are a day or 2 before.

Fun? My cousin plays at Brewsters in Exshaw which he classifies as "fun" but is a bit of a drive, its also not expensive, quite casual, but I hate the course. Its very gimmicky I find and I don't classify that as fun, maybe that is just me. Because I find Vulcan fun, again maybe too far to drive maybe, but not expensive and the front (original) 9 is short and tight and "classic" golf but the back (new) 9 is more links style, longer and open. I find that course fun.

Honestly, city courses. They're not terrible, relatively close by and on the cheap side, especially if you're walking. I quite like McCall Lake.

Guess it depends on what is 'fun'. I played Wingfield last week, and while getting a tee time was easy, and the price wasn't bad ($55 on week day). I thought it was in awful shape, that is not fun to me.
Might be out of the way but its hard to beat Strathmore when it comes to condition and value. $52 Monday-Friday, $68 on weekends, and then twilight is $40 every day after 4pm.
Also have a cool deal right now called '9 and Dine', $30 for 9 holes and a $10 voucher for the restaurant.
All this, and the driving range is off actual grass not those silly mats that just make you think you're doing something that you're not.

Yeah, exactly. A course like Blue Devil down south is fairly forgiving in terms of keeping the lost ball count low, but it's expensive for what it is. Meanwhile, the city courses are generally pretty open off the tee and not gimmicky - and when they are gimmicky or weird, it's usually not in a "lose your ball" kind of way, like, for example, the front 9 at Springbank or the Pointe 9 at Heritage Pointe, or most of Valley Ridge. For example, having a random tree in the middle of the %*@$& approach like they have on the third hole at Confederation Park, is probably not as big a concern for a novice.
McCall has a bunch of holes with water but you can generally play away from it without much hassle: https://golftraxx.com/full-layout?co...M5&static=true

For a fun track, but a bit of a drive. I'd recommend Drumheller. The front nine is pretty standard, and while it's not super easy, it's "normal". The back nine is in the hoodoos and it's both neat, gimmicky, and maybe not particularly easy. I realise what you're saying about it being of limited talent, but for a pretty cool place to play (even if you lose a number of balls!), it's something to consider.
It's pretty laid back though. Like most small town courses, it's not stuffy and you can just relax and play golf.

Anywhere within 2 hours drive or so is definitely fair game to me.
Cool places to play definitely rank high for me (they just seem to be more expensive). I've been on a few courses in the mountains and in BC that have some amazing views, which makes doubling par worth it I guess? lol

You can also just play the forward tees if you want to make things simpler.
