I watched it for a second time yesterday, and I'm still ok with it. The actors did a great job for the most part of imitating the originals. I still didn't like Kirk. the Shatner Kirk had a sarcastic gung ho outside, but he was a smart guy who worked with his crew on the inside.
The new Kirk has a sarcastic gung ho outside with a stinky ###### bag interior. I thought he was pretty much unlikeable and they tried to force his relationships.
Honestly the best characterisation in the reboot was McCoy.

Star Trek 2 has a tentative release date of June 29th, 2012. This specific date was chosen because of its proximity to the 4th of July weekend in the US.
Originally Paramount had hoped to release it in Summer 2011 but that meant it was unlikely that JJ Abrams would be able to return as director due to a busy schedule. Moving the movie to Summer 2012 increases the chances Abrams can return in that capacity.

As for the sequel, I really don't want to see Khan. I don't want retreads or remakes. I want original stories. Star Trek movies have the problem of always having to put earth in jeopardy to make a good film, otherwise it doesn't seem epic to the producers. They need to take a page from Avatar and learn to create an amazing universe worthy of boldly going into.
This is really tiring:
Star Trek the Motion Picture - V'Ger threatens Earth
Star Trek II - Khan gets the Genesis Device which can threaten Earth
Star Trek IV - Alien Whale Probe threatens Earth
Star Trek First Contact - Borg attack threatens Earth
Star Trek Nemesis - Shinzon plots to threaten Earth
Star Trek - Nero threatens Earth
|
Avatar was the same thing, only instead of the Earth being threatened we were drawn to the Navi and it was their homeworld being threatened

That is an amazing leap of logic that makes little sense. Someone or something will always be threatened in a movie with good guys and bad guys. My criticism is Star Trek films always have to bust out Aliens attacking Earth angle and then the Captain of the Enterprise has to save Earth otherwise they have trouble figuring out an angle that is "worthy" of a motion picture Star Trek film while some of the best Star Trek stories are completely different and quieter episodes.
They need more of Star Trek the Motion Picture (despite the poor execution) idea of creating a sense of wonderment and mystery (based on Space 2001). Maybe they need more of the Star Trek 6 political/thriller (well...maybe not). They need more of the Avatar angle of genuinely creating new worlds with new life and new civilizations and something that really creates a universe you want to explore instead of just another "massive alien ship (or bad guy that hates Kirk) is attacking earth!" film.
Because of that, I partly don't think the new Trek is really that great on the big screen and it's too bad they can never get a TV series properly done anymore because you need those other pure sci fi or introspective or drama episodes to make Trek what it is. I don't particularly like most of the movies. My favorites are The Motion Picture, Star Trek 6, hated all the next gen movies, etc. The last one set the ball rolling but the plot was just another recycled big alien ship wants to blow up earth plot.
Give us the Guardian on the Edge of Forever or something (okay maybe I don't want to see Time Travel again but more alien archeological mysteries would be great like the Iconian Outpost for example). Give us some bit of the great Galileo 7 tension. Give us some Rekkisian flute action. Give us some more wierd space anomalies that make reality twisted and scary.
For me, I'd like the Enterprise to skip the whole Khan/Nemesis angle (although they could lay the seeds to creating a real nemesis for Kirk) and do something different. They need to do what the freaking mantra says, to boldly go where no man has gone before and explore something cool. What I would really like to see is a slice of life movie where they spend like 15 minute sections telling little stories about the crew or short stories about away missions or skip between several contained storylines or something but that would never sell as a major movie.

And if you are going to do action... do it like "Yesterday's Enterprise". Where the buildup is 9/10ths of the fun and you give a tinker's cuss about the characters.

Agree about Bones and Kirk.
I didn't like (this is after a recent re-watch) some of the forced drama. After they destroyed the enemy ship with the black hole and offer him help - they stick around to shoot at it. Why? These weren't ingorant kids who didn't understand black holes, they knew a) the romulan ship was doomed and b) the enterprise was in danger.
That and there were a couple other times where they tried to force drama. I was watching for some other plot holes discussed here and elsewhere, seemed silly/minor though. Very good movie, even with a second watch.

Solid post, something I had tolerated but now that you articulate the Earth angle I totally agree.
The best Trek episodes always featured a conflict between multiple parties with pros/cons in every corner. Prime Directive says we need to do X, innocent party needs Y, but Z "feels" right. Usually the resolutions were terrible bordering on embarrassing, but "Earth vs Evil" is really selling a fantasy series short.

Kind of off topic, but I just came back from Star Trek: The Music. It was performed by the CPO, and hosted by Robert Picardo (the doctor), and John de Lancie (Q). It was amazing! I had chills running down my spine all night!
There is another performance tomorrow, but I doubt there would be any tickets left.
For the encore, they played the title music for this movie. They said it was the Canadian premier of the music's performance. Great event!

I went to the same show as you. It was awesome and Robert Picardo and John de Lancie were both hilarious. It was a great time and I was thrilled when they did the theme for Star Trek (XI) as the encore!

Yeah, there definitely are tons of lens flares. I don't find that it bothers me but I am sure some people are slightly irked by it.
I think you will definitely see that cut back in the next movie as J.J. Abrams also thought there were too many and he was the one who put them in!

Karl Urban, the Real McCoy himself (er, Hank McCoy), is staying at the same hotel as me here in Toronto.
Dude was sitting with five gorgeous women, all of whom I lent to him.

Leonard McCoy is from Star Trek.
Hank McCoy is Beast from X-Men.
You can't mix these things up on the internet or the nerds get pissed.

I intentionally did that, for that very reason.
Who's the doctor then? Let's just call him Star Trek McCoy. His first name is irrelevant.

I will accept 'Bones'.
Oh and the lens flares only get really noticeable when you're looking for them.
