Doesn’t make sense to trade their starting goaltender, plan to go into the season with 20 million in cap, and keep Andersson. I get why they kept him at the deadline but last offseason didn’t make sense with what else they did. Seems like the plan is to be bad next season as well.

How reliable is The Win Column? They claim that LA offered a huge package for Ras, but he doesn’t want to play there…

That’s what Lebrun said yesterday. “Whopper of a deal but Ras wouldn’t commit long term there”

As we're learning, waiting until the last year of a player's contract to decide whether he'll be part of your roster long-term means even if he doesn't stay, all you'll likely get for him in a trade is his rental value. If the plan is to maximize asset value, you don't let it get to that. But the Flames historically have other priorities besides maximizing asset value - trying to squeak into the playoffs, maintaining the goodwill of players right up to the moment they leave, etc.

Don’t give permission to talk extensions.
Try to trade a guy expecting the value that would only come back if he was extended.
Am I missing something?

The trade needs to be worked out first.

You shouldn’t, cause then you are letting the player dictate where they want to go. You let the teams make offers to you based on signing him to an extension and if you like the package coming back, then you let them talk extension.
I think that’s how it should be done.

Craig dodged the question about whether Andersson would only do a trade and sign with one team, saying he’s happy to be a Calgary Flame. To me, his answer spoke volumes.
And it doesn’t sound like Calgary and Vegas were ever able to agree on a deal, because Craig never gave Vegas permission to talk extension with Andersson. This is consistent with what we’ve heard so far.

Isn’t it more that Craig didn’t like the package Vegas was offering?
