The value is what the value is. And the value is very similar to previous deals for similar Dmen. Again - personally I think Tanev should be worth more. But the market decides that.
I suspect Conroy re-canvassed the interested teams and had clarity that no 1st was forthcoming. So he might have got a better condition on the second pick, or even a later pick thrown in. But you are risking that the market shifts, as other dmen become available, or Tanev becomes injured.
|
A dozen or so potential buyers for Tanev and in some people's minds, Conroy must have left a vastly better offer on the table from another one of those buyers.

It's a mediocre return for Tanev given the reported interest. Which is fine. It just doesn't make a lot of sense to accept a mediocre deal over a week before the deadline.

The Wizard signed Tanev for free
It also cost Dallas a 4th and maybe a 3rd in addition to the 2nd and prospect

Hopefully the Flames can make some noise with a good number of those draft picks.

This is what a lot of people said when the Flames traded Baertchi for a 2nd - gave him away!
That 2nd (Andersson) has had a fair bit more than 'no impact for the Flames' I would say.

They aren't supposed to make an impact yet. Actually it's better they don't right now.

Grushnikov seems similar to Yan Kuznetzov? Size, style, and draft position.
Is that accurate?

I strongly suspect that if the Flames traded a 2nd, a prospect, and a conditional 3rd for a 34 year old UFA, that you would lose your ####.

To me Grushnikov is the key to if it’s a good trade or not. Stats say he is nothing special but we’ll see
Also it’s looking like the Flames don’t do retention is true. Otherwise what the hell Conroy is saving the retention for?

Remember folks a late 2nd rounder this year isn’t a whole lot worst than a late 1st, I will guarantee there will be players taken 55-64 that are ranked 23-32 by a lot of scouts. We just need our scouting staff to be on the ball.

You don't think Conroy didn't tell the other buyers that the deadline was now today and they better put their best offers forward? Another 9 days would somehow change their minds about what their best offer should be?

Crazy no GM wanted to pay a first. Healthy Tanev for the last part of the season and playoffs I feel is worth that. Seems GMs are being more stingy with draft pics.
It seems Conroy is slotting for the future finding a very defence first dman to play with the other D prospects who might benefit playing with that type of player. He also gets this trade out of the way so he can focus on Hanifin and any other business.

But you don't know what was available, as Jiri pointed out the market needs, dictates what is being offered. Conroy likely went back to all the GM's to see if they had a better offer until the best one that was there.
Let's say you lived in a small town and they only had one car dealership, you're likely going to pick from what's available. Maybe your selection is limited because of what you can afford.. Conroy has to take the best deal that the market offier's him. There was not a lot of time left plus you don't want your defenseman getting injured. Conroy and staff feel we got a really good player, let's give him the benefit of the doubt and just see what happens.

Huh, they retained 50%

Only a single late 1st so far and no blue chip.
Alot of quantity over quality there.
But I guess that's more lottery numbers we could potentially hit.
