Yeah, that makes sense as to why Philips would bet on himself with Calgary having the twp way deal for the full first year.

The Flames offer makes little sense to me.

I really don't get why he was offered a 2-way that converted to a 1-way. If you believed in Phillips show the kid some faith and give him a 1 year 1-way like the Caps did. I totally get it from Phillips' perspective, all these years he was a good solder, he did everything he can in the AHL and now you give me another 2-way contract but you say you believe in me?

That's just such a kick in the dick.

Apparently he needed yet another year of AHL development. After being named a first team AHL all star and leading the top team in scoring, he still had a lot to learn in the AHL?

And yes, he takes the guaranteed pay out every time. This is a sport of injuries, and Phillips is turning 26.

Another major issue with the Flames is that there is such a lot jam, from not playing the other prospects either. Coronato, Pelletier, Zary, Ruzicka, and Duehr were competing for the same spots. A two way contract with the flames guarantees f all.

They had a full roster with players who aren’t able to be sent down. Arguably the 2 year deal is better for him, since it’s more guaranteed money. I think the Flames burned that bridge through Sutter last season. Had the contracts been reversed I still think he would have tried the caps organization.

So happy for Matty, what a way to get your first and I’ll continue rooting for him.

Haven't gone through the thread but I'm listening to the FAN post game show right now and when asked the first question, Phillips first sent his thoughts to the Snow family. What a CLASS ACT.

"First and foremost, would like to send my thoughts to the Snow family back in Calgary. Pretty heavy thing for everyone involved. It's a difficult thing but they're making the most of it, so just sending my thoughts there."

Yea, I think that's the problem, because of Sutter's actions the Flames really needed to mend those fences by sweetening the deal and showing Phillips some faith. Giving the kid a 1-way doesn't mean he can't be sent down, it just means that he'd be paid his full salary no matter where he played. So if Phillips pooped the bed, they could have still sent him down, but I guess Murray Edwards didn't want to pay the little extra dough.

If he gets injured his insurance won't pay him the full salary. It's also better to enter the NHL at a year younger at this point. if things go horribly wrong in the NHL for Phillips this year, it's not like he can't get a guaranteed AHL contract for next year. Money now is always worth more than money later.

I don't know if anyone caught it, but the capitals also had a nice tribute and announced that they would be donating last nights 50/50 proceeds to ALS in Chris Snows name.

Very classy move.

The Pens did that as well, so I am going to assume that every other team will also be doing this.

Yeah I ####ed up two way contracts with waiver eligibility… again. I’m back to the flames offer made no sense.

Backstrom was an absolute non factor the other night. As focused as we were on Ovi, where the hell is Backstrom?

He's only 35.

Just slow starts all around? Veterans clashing with coach?

So far the caps look like they will finish lower than CHI in the standings.
