He has been a development coach since 2021. IIRC he stopped being an assistant coach after Sutter was hired.

Guess I am neither excited nor disappointed by these rumors. Or Conroy too for that matter. I am definitely interested to see what moves get made this off season and no matter what, will be starting the season with hope.
I don't lay much of the blame for last season on Sutter but no doubt, whatever coach we get will be less rigid.

Conroy's on his way to joining their club, for what it's worth.

I'm pretty sure the PP was just a rumor from Seravalli that was later debunked.
|
It doesn't really add up that the Flames would have a top 10 PP the year prior (albeit with different personnel) without practicing, or that they would have gone from practicing that season to not practicing this season.
There were poor coaching tactics likely resisting change because it worked pretty well the year before. Failing to adapt to new players and their skill set is what caused the PP to plummet and likely is a big reason the team missed the playoffs.

Curious if that would be considered a demotion? Is it something he wanted or forced into the role?

I think they did a lot of reshuffling after that covid season and brought in Cale McLean to the big club to take his role and moved him around.
I think a demotion in title only.
The staffs seem to be becoming NFL size now, not sure that many coaches are needed.
Always wondered if that was something that truly bothered Darryl as he often talked about how big the staffs are compared to when he came in.

Yeah, gonna be honest. I'm feeling like we're about to kickstart the Young Guns 2 era.
Next step: full time pedestal jerseys.

The whole Conroy, Iginla, Tangs, Savard thing spooks me a bit but I'm not going to worry about that until they actually start hiring people. The organization needed change and for better or worse that is what we will get.

Young guns comparison doesn't make sense. Nothing mattered then. Stockpiling picks, making correct draft choices, making shrewd trades etc. None of that would have got us anywhere.
Almost every aspect of building a hockey team was irrelevant back then due to the Canadian dollar and no salary cap. We were a feeder team that couldn't afford to do anything to compete with the big teams. We couldn't afford to keep anyone that blossomed and couldn't afford to bring star players in.
This isn't that.

I was going to say something similar. The Flames marketed the youth movement back then as something that was positive because they couldn't afford to have high priced stars and proven veterans in their primes on the team. They had to run a budget roster and were trying to make the best of it.
The movement toward youth now is different. The Flames have high priced players, but because of the cap, they need to find young players that can bring energy and play above their cap hit.

Yeah, I just meant in terms of a boring team with boring players playing a boring system implemented by boring "hire from within" or hire from outside but with a resume that can fit on a business card coaching staffs.
The change this org needs is in the "Flames Way" cloud that colours every decision we make and path we go down. As long as our mantra is "pack a lunchbox and swing for the infield," all we're really doing is changing the faces.

Not sure any of that applies to the current regime.
All the discussion is about the team scoring more goals, given the green light in the offensive zone to be creative and make plays.
I think Sutter set a good blueprint in certain things that need to be tweaked to make this team successful. Being a more potent offensive team and allowing them to play with more freedom offensively is going to help. Just can't get away from our defensive structure when things fall apart.

Fair. I'm just imagining the team we watched last year now being coached by Mitch Love and Ryan Huska, and thinking it's just gonna be that - but with more mucking and grinding.
(I'll admit I haven't seen the Wranglers play, so I don't really know Love's style or systems, etc, but I imagine he's been groomed to stick to "Flames Hockey.")

You bring up a good discussion, anyone know what is Love's style of hockey?

I would assume its going to be based on the talent he has, but I looked up his coaching his history and his teams do score a lot of goals.
I never watched any Wrangler games but I would be interested in knowing as well.
