I think that's a fair assessment.
We know that Rick Tocchet was the beginning of OEL's fall off as a top pairing guy so we're going to give Hughes to him? In hopes of what?
I get that Boudreau isn't the answer. I don't like how it's being handled but that's another story. He's got structure issues and is using a system that does not work for this group on the defensive side of the puck. But is flipping to a guy on the exact opposite side of that spectrum who is known for snuffing out player's joy of the game and has had absolutely no tangible success the right idea?

Yeah, I'm not really a Boudreau guy, but how can you do your job when you're Schrodinger's head coach?

Love to see the canucks screw up their rebuild in amazing fashion the way they have.
I mean they were set up to have an amazing core.
Drafted and developed most of the critical key pieces of a strong core:
High end #1 and #2 centers with Petterson and Horvat
What looked like a legit Norris contending #1 dman in Hughes
A legit #1 goalie in Demko
But thanks to meddlesome ownership and poor management they did the same thing most Canadian based teams do, tried to kick the door open and rush the rebuild by making terrible trades and UFA signings for older and more expensive support players.

All. Literally every Canadian team does this. It's a big part of why no Canadian team has won a cup since 93.
The next time a Canadian team wins a cup, it isn't going to be some painstaking rebuild going right. It's going to be a 2004 Flames or 2011 Canucks where everything clicks at the exact right time in some form.

I don't think it had to be this dire though. This is a starting point for a solid team.....
Core....
Horvat
Pettersson
Quinn
Demko (hip?)
Top 6 guys...
Kuzmenko (could be a star)
Boeser
But they screwed themselves.....
Awful drafting, coaching, the blueline is terribad with OEL as the wrong kind of anchor, and JT Miller is a tool and signed.

Canadian teams just try to expedite their rebuilds about half way in, and that #### backfires every time
Flames did it too by spending key assets on Hamonic and signing bad albatrosses like Neal, but didn't set them back as badly as the Canucks moves have, and they were able to make a run at it until their own players boned them
Or you're Toronto and Edmonton and just neglect addressing your defense until you have no cap to improve it

That scam artist in Arizona John Chayka did no favors to bringing in fresh faces. Truth is that a GM makes 82.5M worth of decisions. It would take a lot of guts to offer a job to someone who isn't a known commodity.

At no point were the Flames ever legitimate Cup contenders because of the deals for Hamonic, Hamilton, signing Neal etc etc. It doesn't matter if other Canadian teams "faired" better or worse after falling in the same trap, they've all taken themselves out of the conversation of being legitimate cup contenders.

Thank you, media and some fans can say the flames are contenders, doesnt mean they are. You need to get closer than 3 games away from the WCF, 7 years apart to be considered a serious contender. Hope that changes this year but until then... they are not true contenders.

The Flames have won division titles in the last two full NHL seasons. One was 2nd overall. They were certainly in the convo.

the dominant group of last season stays together, no question they earn contender status league wide in the following seasons
maybe Markstrom gets pushed out for Vladar/Wolf, but I have high confidence in that group led by that top line

I caught a portion of the Rutherford press conference today in the car and I have to give props to the Canucks media they were asking the tough questions and the questions the fans want. Seems like the Alberta media is scared to do that and typically throw softballs at the GM’s in press conferences like this. Edmonton fans think their media is so negative and terrible they have no idea that media team has been carrying water for that franchise since Pronger left

most teams have great regular seasons and then big time playoff chokes before they ever get over the hump
