The fact it is relatively quiet suggests to me neither side wants to rock the boat too hard and are probably happy to keep discussions private. The more quiet it is, the better if you’re in the sign Gaudreau camp IMO.
It does seem like neither side seems worried and the urgency isn't there, which I think is a good thing. Both sides could just see the pen on paper as a formality that can wait until the end of the season.

At this point, JG is having a good season, so there is no point in creating a distraction. If JG wants to extend before the season is up, then it will happen. If he wants to wait, then the Flames have no choice but to wait.

It’s been a weird season, especially with the long COVID break combining with Xmas. Gaudreau’s agent stretched things last time, so I don’t know why people expected something different this time.

I see this turning out like Tavares.

The video of the Islanders fan screaming at Tavares when he was back in NY sitting in the penalty box was hilarious. “Ya coulda told us John, you shoulda told us!!!”

Other than Stamkos who was the last marquee player to reach UFA and resign with their current team?

I can't think of any.

They need to be signed at the deadline or they need to be traded. Can't afford to end up like the Bluejackets.

Landeskog was pretty much there a year ago.

Well it dragged the jackets into a re-build.
I think this team sees the next 2 years as the "Sutter window". After that I have no idea what the approach will be.

Would be a shame to waste Markstrom's prime years to rebuild.

Kinda leaves only one option...

I will say he seems a lot happier now than he did 2 years ago.

Just speculation on my part but it seems to me Guy Gaudreau and the rest of the family are appreciative of what the Flames have provided to Johnny. If JG is happy and comfortable, why mess with that? He may leave but I doubt it is a decision he makes easily.

I just don’t see why anyone would snicker at that scenario. I think that the idea that Treliving is less competent than the average fan is the more far fetched scenario. Some fans seem to think that Tre was unaware of what could happen if Gaudreau was not signed in the off season, as though he had no plan… seems pretty hard to believe to me.

It's extremely rare for star players. Once a star makes it to UFA they're going to get bombarded with offers and their pick of region to play in. Stamkos was a little different as Tampa as a location and team was a huge draw to any UFA.

Johnny and Chucky are getting more expensive by the game.
It's weird to be excited when they score, only to immediately think that the goal just bumped their next contract by $100k.

What? It's not about no plan, it's about Gaudreau having all the leverage the closer this marched to the final year of the contract. Brad knew this as well as we did, but it's take two and Gaudreau also knew the significance of not signing once he was close to UFA.

I dislike all this negative vs positive talk. It's an unnecessary divide that gets tossed around too much by those that want positive feelings, imo. And maybe it's a difference in where people get the positivity in sport.

Maybe it's just me, but I value message board discussion but don't get mad or happy based on what people are saying, for me it's all about the on ice product. 100 people can say the team sucks on here, including me, but if I turn on the game I'm cheering for a win and excited if they do win.

I don't know, maybe I just see it differently. I tend to just speak dispassionately and matter of factly towards Flames topics online, which leads to a "negative" label by Bingo and others, but I really don't feel the same way in real life while cheering. I'm just drinking beer, laughing and hoping they win it all. But I would never try to will the team to be better than I think it is through online discussion, and I feel that many do actually require positive discussion here to help with their overall Flames vibes, and maybe that's the difference.

If everything points to Gaudreau likely leaving, I'll just say that, I'm not going to type out something more positive to make me feel better about the chances, as nothing here will have any effect on Gaudreau signing or not.

And as of the season starting, the chances of Gaudreau re-signing here before becoming a UFA became very small. I really hope he re-signs as it will wreck this current build if he doesn't, and perhaps I should express my hopes more often so that my feelings on what will actually happen don't add to negativity for fans that don't want that on here. Maybe it's important for some of us that come off "negative" to show the "human" side of our fandom - that we still want the team to win and succeed, otherwise we wouldn't be fans.

Me too. All the signs point to him staying, I find it amusing people think Tre is bumbling this. I think the agreement is already in place.

You wonder how much the inability to get started on a new arena will affect these guys decisions to stay long term with the Flames.

Again, though. When has that happened? Why would it happen? Like they already agreed upon a contract and then said "but let's not do it now, we'll sign it after the season, right before you can talk to any team in the league"? Its the second time this has been brought up and it makes zero sense from the Flames or Gaudreau's perspective. Gaudreau could suffer a career ending injury during the season and lose the entire next contract that he's already agreed to.

And from the Flameds perspective, they have a superstar player locked into an "agreed upon contract" that isn't signed? Can anyone explain how this makes any sense at all?

With the lawyers and agents involved, I literally cannot see a single reason for either side to be like "Okay, we agree on the contract, see you guys in the spring to sign it". I literally don't get this angle and how it's being brought up as a thing.

Lol what agreement dude? He got 3 points tonight, you think an agreement of a dollar figure is done? Term? I doubt anything is done if Johnny is smart he waits till July 1 and sees what the market is. I think he stays it’s gonna be a huge contract.
