I hope Dube draws back on the line with Toffoli and Monahan. Need some speed on the line. Love Lucic, but that line doesn’t work in the offensive zone/transition game at all.

Monahan is never getting bought out.

Monahan at $4.375 million is certainly not a good contract for anyone unless his game takes a drastic turn for the better. You really see someone giving up a good draft pick to pay him that?

There are teams where the cap space is irrelevant...with one year left it might be possible to move Monahan

So those teams are giving up quality picks or prospects just to help the Flames? Why?

Duchene and Johansen are both back from the dead this year, maybe one team thinks they can do it with Monahan. Get the right doctors behind him and they’d probably be right.

Monahan will have 30 some points this season, I think you could give him away

Man, if only. Had management decided to expose Monahan to Seattle before the Bennett trade was made, in a different timeline, perhaps the Flames could have both Bennett and Gio in the line up now. TDL acquisitions solved.
This is exactly what Treliving is probably looking for right now, an experienced left shot defenseman and a good middle 6 forward who can make an impact in the playoffs.

Sorry Harry Lime made the claim that he would return a pick or good prospect.
I agree Monahan is movable, everyone is. But you’re definitely retaining salary, adding picks or taking back a contract in return. Likely some combination of these which is why some people bring up a buyout. Really depends on what happens with the club’s other contracts.

Let's frame this another way for some perspective:
'21-'22 Monahan, w/most of the season on PP1
53 GP
8 goals
14 assists
-13
$6.375M
'18-'19 James Neal 'disastrous' Flames season
63 GP
7 goals
12 assists
-5
$5.75M
Now that Toffoli has taken away Monahan's PP1 slot, those numbers might converge even further.

There are no teams where the cap space is irrelevant.
The better teams are always up against the cap.
The teams with lots of cap space generally have that space on purpose, as they don't want to spend to the cap. They simply don't take bodies to increase their expenditures. They may do so for a price though, usually to collect good draft picks.

I see you are using the outliers to prove the premise.
While there are exceptions, it against the odds.

No, to try to help themselves at C. A lot of rebuilding teams are thin down the middle.
Expiring contracts are a good bet because you can flip them at the deadline to recoup or exceed your initial investment.

Monahan simply cant keep up with the game anymore. He isnt good at anything just an anchor. The fall off with this guy has been incredible. Hopefully we can move on, he brings nothing to this roster

I'm not sure that there's any pro scout out there who is suggesting to their GM that Monahan is the guy to go out and get, even with salary retained. His game has obviously dropped off a cliff, but he's also not a massive liability. The primary issue with him is blocking re-signings this summer, not actually his on-ice performance.

Yeah, people here talked about getting Kessel, even though his big asset (shooting) seems to have fallen off the same cliff. So the perceived value may still be there for a team. The difference is the one year left.

Even one year of a bad contract has negative value. We have seen that lots before. Why give up assets for Monahan when the team moving him has no option but to move him? I wouldn't expect a bidding war.
I hope I'm wrong but when has a bad contract been moved for value in return in the offseason, even with only one year left?

Well the issues are in fact
1) existence of salary cap
2) his salary
3) his performance
4) Flames cap situation
It is all these things interrelated. No one is calling him a massive liability on the ice, if he was he wouldn't be playing.
But lots of guys that get bought out re-sign for less money. They can still play just not commensurate with their level of pay.

The problem with moving Monahan is he has a 10 team no trade list and unfortunately Arizona is almost certainly on there. Otherwise you could just toss them a 3rd and a b prospect to take his contract away. They have almost no players under contract next year, they have to get to the cap floor somehow.

I think you'd be surprised at how many lists Arizona is not on. Players like the weather and lifestyle. A lot like the Covid rules (or lack thereof). I think he'd waive in this case anyway. He'd get more minutes and a better chance to improve his numbers.
Players' lists don't seem to me to be hugely based on success of the team. Lots of people have Calgary on their lists, and Calgary has almost never been a horrible team like AZ or Buffalo. When it was on Kadri's list it was a pretty good team.
