But why would he take $6M over 4 years when he could get it in 2-3 instead?

Last off-season was interesting in that he was the last UFA D-man to sign for over a million (Sep. 10; technically Chara was later but IIRC it was rumoured done but not announced).

It was probably a stressful free-agency period where he found himself without a chair when the music stopped. Ryan Murray 1x2M on Aug 2 being the only other guy to not get done on Jul 28 or 29. So I imagine he won't hesitate to take a reasonable offer if it's on the table, though CGY may have bigger issues to deal with on Jul-1.

Does anything about his play this year suggest he'll warrant a reduction in his AAV (unless it's with my crazy idea)?

Circling back to Zadorov, anyone thinking he's getting a reasonable contract as a 27 year old UFA is out of their mind. He's shown he can slide into the a top four, massive blueliner, hard brutal body checker.. these players aren't dime a dozen on the UFA market.

Will be worth the contract? No. Will he get it? 100% yes.

What was Engelland's % of the cap at the time? Zad alot like Engelland imo, just bigger, faster, meaner and more skilled. Totally worth 5x3.75m imo especially with the top 4 all coming in under 5m. The problem is Monahan and Lucic. They are worth 2.5m combined and make 13m. It will suck to lose Zadorov because of those anchors

I think there's a better chance he gets 3 x 5.25.

Zadorov is going to be ridiculously expensive in UFA.

@TheScorpion, agreed. Honestly think you might be a bit extreme side, but he's getting four years and 4/year is a given.

Especially if he puts in a monster shift in the playoffs.

He's also lining up to have a career year. That man is going to get paid.

Who’s more important to our team going forward big Z or tachucky cheese? Tough call. This guy is a tower of power defensively. And he has some offensive chops. Decent mobility, good slapper and likes to make plays from the point. Easily one of my new favorite flames. Nazem kadri looked like a Tim bits player asking for a penalty. Rich coming from that greaseball. He’s been pretty dirty in his career too. Pot meet kettle. But the kettle is a lot bigger than the pot in this case.

Easiest question ever. Tkachuk is a core player.

Big Z is a bottom paring dman having a very good year playing sheltered minutes.

Easiest question ever? Holy hyperbole Batman

That’s naive.

Anyway, I disagree. Losing zadorov after his blossoming isn’t an easy depreciation to facilitate. There’s no one on our team beside EG, who can remotely play an intimidating physical style that big Z does. Tachuck is a good player but he’s more of an offensive zone only player. He hasn’t been able to will the team to any notable playoff success and to me plays with a fantastic playmaker game breaker. Zadorov plays with EG.

I just don’t think it’s as facile as you make it out to be.

This is a foolish objection. You don't win in the playoffs by having one player who ‘wills the team’. You win in the playoffs by having a full roster of good players who all play well and play together.

Why didn't Zadorov will Chicago to the playoffs last year? Or Colorado past the second round?

The mere fact we're talking about Tkachuk "willing his team to victory" as an expectation puts him in an entirely different tier of player.

The mere fact that some people are talking about any player ‘willing his team to victory’ simply shows that some people's expectations have lost touch with reality. It doesn't say anything about the players in question.

I love Zadorov but Tkachuk has become one of the best power forwards in the game. He is a genuine superstar that 31 other GMs would run over their own grandmothers to acquire. This is not even close in my mind.

Yup. The only way you keep Zadorov and trade Tkachuk is if Tkachuk won't sign a deal the team can live with.

Oh, I dunno. If I were trading Tkachuk, I'd rather get a young, talented, cost-controlled centre back. Dead grandmothers have limited value in a hockey game.

Chucky is easily a top 10 forward in the NHL. Zad is not a top-pairing D-man in the NHL. No idea why these 2 players are being compared.

He’s having a great year, but I wouldn’t put him in the top 10.

His ranks among NHL forwards (minimum 500 minutes), 5 on 5:
GF%: 2nd
xGF%: 4th
Points/60: 6th
ixG/60: 12th

I’m starting to love big Z after despising him the first 10 games of the season
