I have to wonder how happy he is seeing Backlund, probably his single best draft pick, turn into a solid two-way forward and still playing for the team after all these years.

BTW do you "meme" children also "tweet"? 280 characters is about the high end speed for the memer set here.

Anyhow gotta go to work and visit some serious websites.

It would be nice if they bring in a recently retired player to kind of breakdown the game to the players. Versteeg would be perfect, but I doubt he’s available.

Right, because the grease's old boys club totally coached teams to multiple cup wins. Exactly the same.

Incredible news. Best coach I’ve seen with the Calgary Flames.

Wow. What news to wake up to! I'm excited to see how this team plays over the remainder of the season. Who responds well, who shows that they aren't long for this team. Many wanted to see what this team looks like under an elite coach. They get their wish. I'm one of those people.

I have to think this was an ownership decision, their hire. I suspect Treliving may also be on thin ice at this point too but as others have noted his contract runs a few more years too but we'll see.

No more excuses though. Not for the players, not for the GM, not for this team. Some pretty major questions were already answered in the past few hours.

I guess old ties paid off, will be interested to see how this all unfolded behind the scenes.

I didn't think Brad had it in him to give this team exactly the medicine it needed.

And it sounds like he's actively seeking a RW still too.

Incredible.
I am very pro-Darryl. I loved him as a coach, and I'm thrilled he's coming back. I can't wait to see him behind the bench.

...what I'd really like to see is video of his first team briefing.

This move is anything but sad. Are you kidding.

Brad Treliving signed off on this and he didn't have anything to do with the regimes before him. It's not about nostalgia.

Darryl Sutter is a legitimately good coach. The icing on the cake is the nostalgic ties.

Who here is done with being a debbie downer and ready for our next epic run?

I ####ing am.

I'm guessing Brad, Darryl and ownership were literally polishing and signing the contract during the game.

Like the players I was checking out on the team this season. Thanks to this news I'm excited about Flames hockey again. Shame this move couldn't have been made in the fall but I'm glad ownership stepped in here as Treliving does a lot of things right but hiring head coaches is not one of them. Hopefully the players respond accordingly but if they don't it's pretty clear the ones that don't will be on the outs and not Darryl.

I'm just so glad we get to see the answer to this.

Knowing that the potential of this core wasn't being fully exploited and maybe never would before it would be broken up was hanging over us like a dark cloud I think.

It brings immense relief just to know that we have a chance to find out what these guys have in them when a proven bench "manipulator" thats won is pulling the strings.

This was basically the only move we were going to get so I don't mind it. If Daryl can't get the best out of this group I doubt barely anyone else can. I still think the team lacks what it takes to be elite but maybe Daryl can spark some magic like he's done before. Either way this should give all the answers we need one way or the other.
