I have heard a few rumors (a month or two back) about an arena on the T'su Tina Nation. Anderson Road - 90 Avenue side. They are looking to build it within in the new commercial area( entertainment district?) on the nation. The new BRT will be close by for access.
I'm not referring to the new arena/community center that is scheduled to open in the new year.
So, not on a train route. A huge distance for NW and NE travelers. Heck, even a long way for people in the west end, like Aspen or the Slopes. And BRT is nowhere near adequate for a post game crowd (not to mention it's still going to be a hike from the Reserve to the closest station).
I suspect it would take as long or longer for a person from Royal Oak to get to that location than from Scottsdale to Glendale.
No way they go with an arena nowhere near a train station. Unless the Tsu Tina have a plan to get people drinking home safely by busing people to Westbrook train station or paying for all their Ubers, no way that option flies. It would be a huge challenge and eventual failure at that location IMO.

I have a few sources that tell me good news is coming.
I talked with someone who has been in the room a month ago. I had a fairly inebriated convo with them, so take with massive grain of salt. However, they told me that Flames have reviewed the new inverse bowl design and plans and are really positive. The main driver is that they can charge more for seats since there are no bad ones. The city isn't super positive about this, but I think they are going with it to get a deal done.
The hold up was on tax at that time. Won't get into details but it sounded like philosophy was overcome and they were in the weeds. This person felt a deal could be done.
If this person wasn't pulling my leg (no reason to believe that), the I would not be surprised if we do hear good news soon.

No chance,
Why would the Flames be negotiating with City of Calgary then build it out of the City within Tsuu T'Ina.

When he first said it was on the Nation I assumed near Westbrook and the Grey Eagle Casino. But his description of the location was actually at the other end, near Anderson Road, which is even worse.
I would believe that the Flames had initial conversations with the Tsuu Tina to test the waters and to put pressure on the City, but there's no way they would actually build there. They are keenly aware of the issue suburban arenas face, especially when you are seeking corporate support that is centered in the downtown area.
Vic Park/East Village makes a lot of sense for both the City and the Flames.
A new Flames arena would be the main feature of an entertainment district. Nenshi has already expressed interest in this location last year, I doubt the City has reversed course on that location - even if Nenshi is no longer part of the negotiating committee (which I believe is the case).
On the other hand, if they put the arena on the north side of the Reserve, I'd be at the rink in 10 minutes. Depending how far west along highway 8, I could stand on the highway with a "park here" sign.

He was never a part of any negotiating committee (well technically he is a part of this one... since it's a Council Committee as mayor he's automatically on all committees).

The BRT that runs over buried gas lines on Crowchild? I thought that was going to blow up any day now...

I don’t believe that rumour for a second. Seems
Foolish.

That is probably the most ridiculous suggestion I’ve read, and I feel the forum is dumber for having it.

As a season ticket holder this would be great for me, less than 10 minutes... the back drop with the mountains would probably make it the most aesthetically pleasing major arena from the outside in North America … it would look iconic … no public transit and being non central though kills this idea IMO ...

Well, I don’t think it’s that far fetched. I had heard the idea before too. There is to be massive retail development on the Tsu Tina, south of the Casino, unlocked by and thanks to the ring road which will have hundreds of thousands of people much closer driving wise to that area in general, basically anyone south of Glenmore Tr and West of Crowchild north of the river. Live up in Tuscany? 15 minute drive to Anderson once you get onto Stoney. Auburn Bay at the far south east, probably about the same to Anderson and 37th via the RR.
But more so, my guess is that the developers would love to have the rink there, for the shopping, hotel, and entertainment district they can create around it, even though there is one going in regardlesss. And likely, would provide a huge incentive financially for the Flames owners to build there. Probably save the owners $100m or more in land costs and tax savings etc, nevermind construction shared costs.
But yes, of course access, even with a 8 lane ring road spawning the city making commutes to and from the rink a lot shorter for a lot more people then current, is a problem.
That said, if you could make access to and from the rink by car a shorter trip than most people who drive to a train station and pack on a train, would those people drive? Let’s say parking is $25, of course it may be more but with more space out there and a district and the Flames in control of it, and looking to have traffic into the area, maybe it’s not. Compared for a family of 4 to spend $10x2 on transit to take the train down. Going to be spending 20% to 30% more on game tickets probably, and the same increase on food and booze, so a night out is going to cost regardless. Do people take the train due to convienence or cost savings over driving themselves, currently?
Anyways, yes, transit and ctrain line is preferable. But if they could make an experience where commmuting to and from games is about the same time for 80% of the people in attendance currently, it may be worth the risk. I have been to Ottawa and it is a ride from downtown for sure, but up until recently, the building has been pretty full there, and this would be a better setup with said ring road and an entertainment district hotel, bar, restaurant etc, keeping people there longer or having people get there early. Ottawa is basically the arena in a field with a couple interchanges feeding it, that’s it. This would not be as far for most people then Ottawa is.
But the space the Flames would have to build without restriction, probably build a practice facility out there too. Go the full shot and build a field house out there too. Add in the incentive and large cost saving they’d have from the developers, and also not have to deal with the city and or the Stampede board (these are massive things for the owners) as part of the process, or going forward, and it would be nothing to sneeze at, so a good chance it’s been kicked around at some level at some point, as an albeit unorthodox option.
