If you are considering whether Kurtzman is doing something clever here with a Cardassian in charge, I can assure you, he is not. He just needed a mostly human looking alien to stuff in the roll, and flipped through the Star Trek species-o-dex until he found one he liked.

The Cardassians are misrepresented by us largely knowing of them during their Military Junta phase. As Garrick and even Dukat tell us, Cardassia had a very rich cultural history and was likely much more forgiving in past generations (and probably returned to such ways after federation occupation/rebuild post dominion war.) The military junta (central command+ Obsidian Order) took control after a period of decreased resources and famine, and started the era of Cardassian expansionism we are familiar with.

It's like boiling down German history to the Nazi era!

They did coexist peacefully with the nearby Bajorans for seemingly hundreds of years before deciding to dominate them. And theres evidence that they were exploring further reaches of the quadrant as early as the enterprise era (there were cardassian subjects on that freaky automated abduction repair platform in ENT.)

Well thats was terrible. The opening was very cringe worthy and the rest of the episode was just bleh.

I have to admire their persistence.

I watched a handful of season 1 and it was terri-awful. I could rant as nauseum about the garbage that was season 1.

I think I made it 2 or 3 episodes into season 2 and bailed because it was horrible.

And that was it. And thats only because my wife is friends with one of the actors on Facebook and we still couldnt power through.

Its bad. And it should feel bad for being so bad.

Being a Star Trek fan is inherently self-deprecating. You know most of it is cheesy and bad and you like it anyways, there are almost always redeeming qualities inherent in there somewhere, but if they exist for STD I never saw them.

Oh yeah I'm well tapped out on Discovery now, I don't have any more plans to watch the Michael Burnham show.

I would say the redeeming qualities have always been the characters in the end. Even if it's a bad episode I still like seeing what the characters are up to and what happens to them.

I couldn't care less about Michael Burnham and the rest of the cast might as well be cardboard cutouts.

"STD" is the best possible description for Discovery.

When you look at the ratings a year ago they weren't great. But Star Trek itself is a key franchise and a big part of paramounts streaming services as is Picard, and both haven't had great ratings.



But now they don't have to release their ratings.



I expect it survives because of the name attached to it. Funnily it still rates fairly highly on Rotten Tomatoes.

I want to like Discovery so bad, I really do, but man it's getting old.
There are so many great characters that they could use, and when they do, it's usually pretty good, but for the most part they are just potted plants yelling techno babble.

Now we are into the 3rd season in a row where we will have some existential threat to the galaxy that will all be resolved in the final episode via Deus Ex Burnham. It's getting old.

And man, that first scene in the premiere, man what a turkey. Ignoring the fact that, as others have stated, it was just the opening scene of Into Darkness, how has no one pointed out how dumb it is that when reestablishing contact with another planet Burnham just brings along her boyfriend, who isn't even in Starfleet, and the two of them are so terrible at it they essentially "Who's on first" their way into almost getting themselves killed.

Damnit, let someone else do something.

They wasted such a huge oportunity with Detmer. She had every reason to hate Michael, frankly Michael's actions got a lot of her friends killed and scared her forever. In the first episode of them back together she glared at Michael. Then she forgave Michael in two seconds and sat with her. It was so lame and a bad piece of writing.

Then they teased that she had PTSD or something worse. Then basically she went to the doctor and he asked if she wanted help or to talk, and basically she's nope, I'm fine.

They don't develop the other characters, they're not interesting, Now all Detmer does is show how awesome of a pilot she is and does what Michael says.

Saru, again a pretty much wasted character. Was the Captain and now he's going to come back and be her what XO, wait that's Tilly.

They just rush through other characters to give Michael more time.

Tilly is a cardboard cut out, they wrecked her with her Michael you're awesome you should be Captain Speech. Or the even better we have five minutes of oxygen left, lets hold a meeting so I can tell you all that I love you.

Even Stamets was utterly wrecked at the end of last year. With the whole, Michael's broken my trust with her actions. Oh well back to engineering to say Science F ya in tune with other engineers.

While Kirk and Sisko, and to an extent Janeway and even Archer were the prime focus of the show. The other people in those series counted, did something, contributed to wins, suffered losses, did smart things, did stupid things, did interesting things, were fully formed characters.

In Discovery the background characters are meaningless. You could literally kill them all off and replace them and nobody would notice, or feel bad about it, or mourn it, their deaths would be meaningless, because frankly they are meaningless.

They need to change the theme of discovery to.


Its the Michael show, hey its Mike, its the Michael show look at her do stupid stuff. She cares to much about her crew and loves what's his name and who is she. Its the Michael shoooooooooowwwwwwwww. With this weeks special guest star Michael's mirror universe doppelganger.

The role is the First Officer or the Executive Officer.

Number One was Picard's nickname for Riker (and his dog).
No one else in Starfleet uses that antiquated naval term anymore.
