He said straight up that while he's accomplished a lot in his career this far, he won't be satisfied until he's won. That essentially the same thing.

Best case scenario this is a lateral move from Elliott and hope that Smith doesn't meltdown like Elliott did. And it probably cost a 2nd. There aren't a lot of 35+ year old goaltenders that are trending upwards. Difficult to be excited about this.

Ya youre reading too much into it. He did say he wants to do everything in his power to help this team get to where they want. Which im assuming is the Stanley Cup.

Im tired of responding to every donkey who says this same thing. Be informed before you post and contribute something worthwhile. Compare the two goalies stats. This is not a lateral move. Dear Lord.

He's not supposed to be trending upwards.
He's supposed to hold the fort and give the team a chance to win for a couple seasons while they develop the 5 goalies they have in the minors.
Most importantly he supposed to not melt down like a snowman in July once we do get into the playoffs.

I don't think Brad is the kind of guy to risk having an injury to his starter and relying on an unproven backup.
Only way I can see us having Rittich or Gillies as the backup next year is if one of them performs great before the trade deadline. If they are even just average Brad will get another goalie.
I don't even think they will get the chance though. I'm positive Brad will get another goalie before the start of the season.

This.
Hes buying us 2 years for our kids to be ready.
We're not married to him, hes just buying us time.
That being said it also shows a lot of faith and confidence that the solution to our goaltending issues are in house, just not yet.

I think that your "best case" is actually the worst case scenario. And there's lots of reasons to think that won't happen.

He got Rittich right. We will be looking back on it as the best free agent signing he's made as a GM.

Sounds like Calgary was not feeling great about chances to sign Hickey as he returns for his senior year at BU. #Flames

Yup Flames and Treliving went DUMPSTER DIVING & pulled out Mike Smith. What a joke. We have a good core but we not going anywhere with MIKE SMITH. I just shake my head and kiss the season good bye. Not impressed. I honestly would rather have Chad Johnson.

As much as I don't like this deal, I still do not think that acquiring someone like Raanta or Grubauer is out of the question.
We are going to need a solid back-up as insurance.
What would be funny is if the Flames sign Hickey as a free agent next August. I know probably not likely, but that would make my day.

Elliott's had better stats than Smith for basically their entire careers. From a purely stats perspective, Elliott is near the top of the league over the past five years.
But he's played for the Blues and Flames while Smith has toiled in Arizona.
This isn't about the stats, it's about the consistency that Smith has shown over a long stretch, on a bad team.
He made Team Canada. He was the starter at the World Championships. He's been the MVP on a bad team.
I'm excited to see what he can do in Calgary.

Maybe Hickey is another Erixon, didn't want to be here. Just not as outspoken.
