Akin to how fata is used on this site, I'm going to start using polaking in place of overreacting.

Still, I'm thrilled that the wait is over. Time to christen Rogers Place with some Johnny Hockey magic!

While I don't believe there is a Gio "cap" in the sense that management won't pay more money than Gio ever, I do think that Treliving wants to position the team so that all of the best players are similarly paid. To Johnny, he can say, "we have Monahan at this number and Gio at this number, we think you should come in around the same." Not only does that save them the money on this contract, but it becomes a negotiating framework for Sam Bennett and Tkachuck and whatever contract comes up. Rising tide raises all ships. The moment they give one player considerably more, that negotiation high ground goes out the window.
Further more, the Flames used their leverage to maintain a team focused salary structure. It is what was obviously happening the entire time. I very much doubt the team ever considered going above 7 on this deal.

I use a Chrome add-in called "FilterMe", and it flags the mention of "RGI", "truculent", "advanced stats", "twitter", "Eric Francis", and other indicators of low post quality by outlining the post in question in red.
Actually, there is no such add-in, but if there was, I would spend cash dollar money on it quite gladly, instead of having to skim the voluminous excreta deposited in almost every FOI thread.

Pretty impressive on the AAV for the Flames part, I wasn't sure they would get him for that low. His initial Twitter statement could be a little troublesome if you are a Flames fan however. Nothing in at about wanting to stay in Calgary, he's happy here, loves playing here etc. Simply he just wants to play hockey and has decided to resign with the Flames - for his team mates and the fans. Thanks his family and agent etc. Nothing about thanking the organization, wanting to be a Flame forever blah blah blah. The pessimist in me reads that is isn't happy about the whole situation. Who knows if there is any long term fallout, and I guess in the hockey world 6 years is forever. Just food for thought.

I read it as his agent promised he wouldn't ask Johnny to hold out into the season. When talks with Brad didn't move Johnnys agent probably passively aggressively went about asking Johnny to hold out.
It's the agent that looks bad in all of this. Makes a big deal out of it and barely gets the Flames to budge and probably made life tough for Johnny. An all around loss for the agent in terms of credibility imo.

That entitled brat Gaudreau apologized for being a distraction:

Problem with this is he made sure to mention in his media scrum:
"With the way the organization has treated me so far, I didn't want to miss any games".
That flies in the face of the few comments like yours in this thread as he didn't need to say that. He very specifically made mention of his appreciation for the way he's been treated throughout his time with Calgary.

Anyone with any questions of how much Johnny likes Calgary, and his loyalty to the team really needs to listen to his interview on the Fan. Particularly the first 3 minutes. All the dude cares about is the team.

I predict he has a monster year.

Some notes on the signing from Friedman:
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/3...ames-gaudreau/
Quote:
2. At the end of his contract stalemate, Calgary’s Johnny Gaudreau was getting some pressure from teammates to get it done. Word is Lindholm is getting similar messages.
This is an interesting one. Kelly Hrudey and Nick Kypreos made it very clear during Saturday Headlines they weren’t pleased about this.
|
Quote:
5. A couple of notes on Gaudreau.
First, I think his opening ask was basically Aaron Ekblad’s contract. The Panthers’ defenceman makes $7.5M in tax-wonderful Florida, so you make allowances for the difference in Alberta.
As it was explained to me by a much-smarter person, someone making $7.5M in that state would net around $4.5M. (There is potential for other deductions, but I’m trying to keep this as simple as possible.) Someone making $7.5M in Calgary would net out around $3.9 million. So you raise your ask to compensate and that’s how I think it went into the $8.5M range. That was not going to happen, but you don’t short-arm your opening offer.
At the end, I think Calgary was only willing to go to $7M if Gaudreau gave up two years of unrestricted free agency, signing for seven seasons. That wasn’t going to happen. It was a struggle, but both player and team will benefit.
