I think the Jackets are going to draft Puljajarvi, and then wait to see who's on the board at #6 before deciding. There's no difference in trading for a hypothetical 3rdOA or trading for Puljajarvi because it's almost certain they're the same thing, but there's a huge difference in trading for a hypothetical 6th OA and the player you want because they're not necessarily the same thing.

Why would the Flames do that to us?

When was the last time a trade like this happened in the NHL?

For a 3rd OA? I don't know. But I know there's been draft trades where a team waited to see who's on the board before pulling the trigger.
Look at Jankowski on draft day. Buffalo say that Girgs is still available and pulled the trigger on draft day, allowing Feastet to move down

If I'm Buffalo and I want the best centre not named Matthews, that leaves me with Dubois.

When was the last time a player was drafted and then traded later that draft. Your example is not the same at all.

Thats a little suspect line of thought. Dubois played a lot of Center yes but he wasn't good at it apparently. Terrible in faceoffs which is 70% of the job a C has over the other forwards.
Next best C I think is Brown and McLeod. Dubois may become a C but is a long ways off from being good at that spot. Overall the better player yes, at Center though? Eeesh.

I can't remember it happening in the NHL, but it happened with Eli Manning and Phillip Rivers in the NFL.

I think it happens in the NBA too, but I don't ever recall it happening in the NHL either.

I think this is by far the smartest way to do it. And therefore I think Flames fans don't have to give up hope for Poolboy until after we actually make the pick at #6.
I can't think of NHL examples, but this is exactly how the Eli Manning / Phillip Rivers trade went down. Eli was a Charger for all of two more picks and then dealt for Rivers. In that case the Giants made the pick and then traded the player...where in this situation I think the Flames would trade the pick and have the Blue Jackets take Brown.

LaMarcus Aldridge as well I believe. Certainly happens in the NBA from time to time, but I don't think it's happened in the NHL. At least not in recent years.

Lindros for Forsberg +?
I guess that didn't happen right at the draft though. Memory is failing me.

Lindros was traded a year after being drafted.

I'm pretty sure it hasn't happened in at least 30 years, if ever. Think about the Blue Jackets brass putting a jersey and hat on Puljujarvi, shaking hands, smiling and getting pictures with him, etc. and then trading him 10 minutes later. It might be a cultural thing in the NHL where that would just never happen.
