I wonder if Burke/Flames would be interested in Jim Johannson with USA Hockey, where he won 2 gold and a bronze in his 5 years at the head of their WJC.
He'd certainly have the pulse of American prospects, the NCAA and likely have international connections

Of the established names I could see it being GMGM, Joe, or Regier
Not sure who of the up and comers Burke is after

Joe Will from the San Jose Sharks organization could be a great hire.

Did anyone else notice Kelly Kiso in box with Burke during tonight's Kings game? What does that mean could he be the new GM??Its not like him watching a Flames game would do the Hitmen any good.

I have been hoping for Kisio to join the Flames at some capacity. Seems to have consistently done a tremendous job with the Hitmen.

Kisio has been doing a great job with the Hitmen and they probably want to move him up the organization. But it seems highly unlikely that he would jump right to the GM position.
Guys need some experience, this isn't the Vancouver Canucks you know

In addition to what Sureloss posted above (not sure when that tweet came out), I remember an article coming out stating that Burke feels Kisio would make for a better AGM than a GM. I would be pleased with that - seems like a good talent evaluator, and coming fresh from the WHL he would probably have a whole lot of insight into many young players.

I can see Kisio in the AGM position in the same kind of role as Weisbrod. I.E the guy all the scouts answer to. Seems to have a knack for finding good prospects .

I like Conroy as much as the next guy, but I really think he's best suited for a supporting role. I just can't see him firing guys and making shrewd deals

Brian Burke insists the fact that the Calgary Flames now have competition in the search to find another general manager will change absolutely nothing about his plan of attack.
Nearly four months after Burke explained the Christmas-time firing of Jay Feaster was done immediately so the club could get on with competing against the Buffalo Sabres for GM candidates, the Flames president of hockey operations says he still anticipates his last interviews will be conducted following the NHL Draft in late June.
“It doesn’t affect our search process at all,” said Burke, the Flames interim GM, when asked if the Vancouver Canucks firing of Mike Gillis would change his approach.
“We have a time-frame we’re going to follow. That means if a candidate comes off the list we simply proceed to follow our process. Our expectation is we will not receive permission to talk to at least a couple people on our list until after the draft, and if that’s the case, we will wait until then.”
|
Quote:
Burke says even if the bulk of candidates are interviewed much earlier, he will wait until every candidate on his list is talked to before making his decision.
It’s quite likely several other teams needing GMs will fill their positions before the Flames do, but Burke wants to take his time to ensure he makes the right hire.
One man in a very interesting position now is Canucks assistant GM Laurence Gilman, who used to work with Burke and will undoubtedly be a coveted candidate for both organizations.
Other than Joe Nieuwendyk, who confirmed he had no interest in returning to a GM chair just yet, Burke has spoken to no candidates to date.
|
Quote:
Anyone who has followed the West Coast drama this year knows it was far from the only reason the sixth-year GM was let go Tuesday.
However, the humiliating chants “Fi-re Gil-lis” clearly marked the last straw for ownership, which took its first major step towards trying to repair the relationship between the club and its furious fanbase.
Burke has long spoken about the role fans play in organizational decisions and how they do have an influence on things. Gillis never understood that and showed disdain for the paying customer making him an easy scapegoat for the Canucks owners, who needed to throw someone under the bus following the disastrous season and ongoing public relations hits the club was taking.
|
Quote:
Burke refused to comment specifically on the Canucks situation Wednesday but did reiterate his very public belief that, unless you are listening to and catering to fans as an organization, you simply aren’t doing your job.
“Obviously, the most important people in the world and universe for us are our fans,” Burke said.
“Everything we do is geared towards giving them a winning team and a positive arena experience. Everything. Our job is to win games and make sure their game-night experience is a good one.”

You'd have to think that of the two organizations, if there was a candidate both teams wanted, that person would choose the Flames.
Much more to work with, already on the upswing organizationally (IMO). There's a good culture in place, a healthy prospect base to work from and veterans that actually care. If I was Burke, I wouldn't bee too concerned about competition either.

Yeah, our position is more attractive. Vancouver basically has to go through the Feaster era still and we're past it. A GM can come in and start making this his team much sooner.

I agree, putting him in the GM position right now would be too risky. Give him time at the AGM spot first.

I think George McPhee might be looking for a job very soon.

If there's a guy that's supremely confident/arrogant in his abilities to turn a team into a contender quickly then the Canucks may be a better fit if he thinks he can make the necessary moves (like MacTavish but follow with actual execution to back up the talk) but he has to realize the fans are fickle, his boss will be inexperienced, and he would be filling the shoes of a guy that just got booed out of town.
Conversely the Flames aren't a quick fix away from being a contender but the foundation is rounding into place in a city where fans are embracing the rebuilt and supporting a team that will struggle and lose more games than they win. No GM has ever been booed out of town in Calgary.
Seems like the Flames would be a position that is more secure as the GM will be given time and patience to build the team and will also have a good hockey man for a boss that he can fall back on for advice.

I'm not suggesting he will, but McPhee taking over here would sure pop the hope balloon that this organization turning itself around had grown into.
