Another crack a the play-offs is another shot at the Cup. I know it's been a while, but the process on how to win the Cup hasn't changed in what? 30 years now? They're not favorites, but they will get a chance to play for it.
I feel bad for you guys, but really as a fan of a opposing team I am happy he stayed in the division.
I'm aware of how the playoffs work, I was merely pointing out the fact that before this year it was never a question of a shot at the playoffs but rather 'How close to the cup will we make it?' I guess just a Freudian slip of sorts.
it is becoming quite noticeable how even the fans are seeing what is devolving into... I guess its like looking back at CP in 2007
Sarich seems broken down? Remember how we all thought Regehr was done when he was traded to Buffalo?
Regehr was 30 and still playing top 4 minutes. He had lost a step but broken down? That's rewriting history to compare him at all to a 35 year old Sarich who spent tons of time in the pressbox despite icing the worst defensemen the team has seen since Sarich got here.
I think these guys can fill a need the Flames had. But to put this in Calgary Flames terms it feels like we just traded Tanguay for Moss so we could reduced Sarich's age by 7 years.
A mid round pick would have made me more enthusiastic about this trade. Now I'm feeling its kind of a push at best.
Jones might fit in well with Backlund. A guy with some puck skills paired up with a North/South guy that can score on NHL goalies.
Top 3 lines in no perticular order.
Beartschi-?????-Hudler
Glencross-Stajan-Stempniak
????-Backlund-Jones
After time to reflect, I am OK with this trade I guess.
Flames needed to get bigger, younger and tougher to play against.
They also needed a right winger/right handed shot.
Trade addresses all of the above, while at the same time removing a forward who obviously no longer wanted to be here, and an aging D-man who just didn't fit anymore.
I don't understand why people insist on making stuff up rather than actually looking at what posters say.
Zuh?

We don't know if he would of been a horrible fit or not. Tanguay-Richards-Iginla could of been lights out, or it could of flopped. We will never know

Well come on MMF, you have to admit that people saying this is a win for the Flames (with some even saying clear win) is basically just being defensive of the club. It's not really an honest view.
Listen that's fine, I can point to the exact same group of guys who take the negative view on every issue without fail.
This quote, and saying "we", like the thousands of active posters here are of a single mind is really stupid.

I'm not going to post any more on this, but I think it's odd that we will defend every move the Flames make when we have more reason to do the opposite.
If you think the vast majority of posters have defended every move Feaster has made since he arrived here... well.. yikes.
33 year old, complementary player top 6 LW with a NTC. A great passer who averages 1.10 shots per game and offers nothing in physicality. Not exactly much value left for us as we continue to change the face, atmosphere and eventually direction of the team.
Versus
28 year old who RW who costs 500k more per year, has a record of being a hard worker with a solid shot and good speed, and a big body to boot. At the same time, is a natural PKer. Had a bad year before but prior to that had 47 goals in 2 seasons.

I think the initial reaction from a pretty large segment (and no, not the vast majority) is to defend the moves of the organization. It's like a "close ranks" thing. I've done the same thing, I sold myself on the Phaneuf trade too, but in the end these trades are often poor. I'll take this one as a push because I can't get into the hypothetical value of Tanguay. I expected he'd return more, but maybe no one wanted him.
Either way, far from a "win"

The point isn't that we gain 500k, more that we take on a contract of considerable length of a player who has ONLY produced in contract years(one year extension after his 45 point season), has character concerns, and put up his worst ever season after he got his big contract.
A player like that is definitely salvageable and maybe he needs a change of scenery, but if you score at a 22 point clip(pro rated) after you get your big contract WHEN there are character concerns I'd love to hear how there is value there.
To put this in perspective, Kotalik scored 27 points one season into his 3 years and 9 million dollar deal. He couldn't get off our roster quick enough and was waived not 4 months after we acquired him, when we had clearly acquired him as an asset and not a cap dump. 6'1, 225, great shot but needs a set up man or is useless.
Looking at stats, Jones was the WORST of any Avs forward who played at least 15 games in terms of on/off ice plus minus, points and goals per 60 minutes, PDO, and offensive zone finishes.
I would really love to hear how a player with character concerns who has only produced in career years and looked useless after getting his money holds ANY value. Avs fans thought he was a buyout candidate, and we have good old Jay telling us how much he uses advanced statistics and even they can't flatter Jones in any manner. So he fails the eye test, character test and statistical test, and he's never won anything in his career. But he's worth Tanguay who was our leading scorer most of last year and additional salary. I'd love to hear how.

The people who hate every move why are they Flames fans is such a garbage statement based on no proof and your anger that everyone doesn't think that everything a management group that has built a bottom team in the NHL does is great.
It is unlikely that most of the people you would lump in that group hates everything, it is highly unlikely that the people you lump into that group is less of a fan than most here and they are much less obnoxious and much less blinded by their views than the homers.
Just think the some people hate everything so that's why they don't like this view is tired, overstated and pretty much a useless comment.

We know this team was a lot more than one player away from being competitive, we know this team was a lot more than one good line away from being competitive, we know that never (even during the Cup run) has Richards been good enough to elevate a team on his own and we know that Richards had a poor year playing with a much more talented team in NY.
Sure it is possible that he somehow returned to his peak by coming here (which is highly doubtful) but even if he did we are left with a 9-11th place team, a mid-first draft pick and a team going forward with little chance to make the play-offs, little in terms of youth coming up and a lot of bad, long term money deals on the books.
Sob had a total of ZERO fights last year. No idea why, but if he disappears like Jackman, then no purpose.
Sob has better career stats than butler
Jones may be big, but he isnt really tough or nasty. I think of a healthier David Moss as has been suggested here.
Tangauy taking way too much grief on here. By far best player in the deal.
Honestly, and I might be in the minority here, but I would have killed for a healthy David Moss. He was never the type of player that blew you away, but he was solid in all three zones, went to the dirty areas, mucked up points in the goal mouth, and was willing to do whatever the coach wanted out of him. Maybe the price tag is a bit high, but I don't think a "healthy David Moss" is a bad acquisition.
You sure about that? You're no longer in a division that essentially handed you the division title the last few years. Los Angeles, Anaheim, and San Jose are all superior teams than Vancouver today, and Edmonton could be as well with a few changes. The Canucks will probably be competing for the fourth and final playoff spots in the division next year; and even that won't guarantee them a playoff spot as they need to be better than the 4th/5th place teams in the other division. Starting next year the Canucks playoff chances will drop dramatically, and your confidence level should not be where it's at right now.
Oh and I can't believe people are saying Cory Sarich is a good player/has any value. What sort of drugs are you guys on tonight? We had a God awful defensive core last year, yet he was routinely in the press box. He was untradable a couple years ago when he was a UFA, and continued to be untradable last year. If Feaster could have brought in any asset for the guy, don't you think he would have pulled the trigger? Not saying O'Brien is any better, but it's hard for him to be any worse.
Besides that O'Brien has been traded four times now, so obviously he has a little bit of value if other teams have given up anything for him in the past (even if it was a meager return). Sarich has had zero value for a couple seasons now, just like Babchuk and Butler.
