Garmin uses the New leaf method where you get a vo2 test and enter y,our data as a base line. This is the most accurate. If you don't have a vo2 test done, it then uses the first beat algorithm 1st or 2nd gen depending on the device, and is claimed to be accurate within 10% for 2nd gen and slighty less accurate for 1st gen.
Here's a good write up explaining their methods.

Yeah I read that the other day.
Still, strange that they would be 800 calories out. Even a simple online calculator is within 100 calories when I put in my weight and time biked.

So I am brand new to cycling. Been looking for a bike for awhile and finally bought this bike.

Anyone have the same bike?

I love Ridleys, they have great service. They make sure you get the proper sized bike, and everything before you put down quite a bit of dough on it.

In my experience I like Ridley's and Bow Cycle.
I avoid The Bike Shop. The one time I was able to get service there it was good, but the other times it has been impossible. Seems you have to be a friend or regular to receive service there (even one of my co-workers said he feels the same way there).

Did the Canmore to Banff round- trip ride today. Fun path to go on.
Wondering how much farther ahead you can start without spending too much time along shoulder of the highway. On the way back it almost looked like you could start in Kananaskis.

I would recommend Calgary Cycle for the best mountain bike knowledge in the city. They have a good sister store in the south called Pure Cycle.
Speed Theory downtown is a good one for really high end road bikes.
For everything else I would definitely suggest Ridleys.

These guys blew it for me big time, to the point of never going back, when they ran a Groupon promotion last year for tune-ups and my wife took advantage with her old Mongoose. The bike came back with a bolt missing on the brakes, ridiculous long-stemmed presta valve tubes mounted on rims meant for Shrader's, that didn't hold air longer than a few days, the rim tape on the rims was folded over on itself with exposed spoke holes, and rubbing brake pads on the set of brakes that did have bolts. I ended up having to re-do the work that they were supposed to do. And this wasn't a case where the bike was already trashed, it was a simple tune-up request that we chose to take advantage of rather than having me do it.
I don't care if you're overwhelmed by a poorly planned promotion - turn away the work if you can't do it properly, because I'll never go back knowing they'd send out a bike with brakes ready to fly off their posts.

That really sucks. I'm surprised because all the work I've had done there has been top notch. I do find that I occasionally get a bit of attitude in there when I go for small stuff. They are the only game in town for certain high end items and I think some of their staff have developed an expectation that everyone who walks through to door is going to drop $6K. That said, the knowledge in that shop is second to none. I have started using Pure Cycle for 90% of my needs - less selection than Calgary Cycle but it's way closer to home and the guys in there are fantastic.

It indeed sucks because I can tell they are a high end place, and I actually didn't sense any attitude at all, even though we were dealing with a low end bike (hell my bike is low end by comparison).
But the work was downright sloppy, like they were either far too overloaded and rushing, or really didn't care about my $200 worth of labour and parts. I'd have gladly brought the bike back a week later if they'd simply asked me to hold off for a less busy time. One of the hidden dangers of Groupon, I suspect.

Starting from Calgary? Are you thinking of an overnight trip, or starting very early in the morning?

At risk of being flamed, where do I find an ordinary, every day red reflector for the back of my bike. I've looked a couple of places and can't find one.

I'd definitely be interested if the timing works on my end. Fat + slow though ...good for 25kph.

I'd go with a rear, red light. It will act as a reflector when not turned on, but will make you more visible when it is turned on.
I have this: http://www.mec.ca/AST/ShopMEC/Cyclin...rear-light.jsp but there are many cheaper versions out there.

It would be a group consensus on a overnight trip or if we want to start early in the morning.

I leaned into a turn too much and my pedal nailed the road. Now my bike makes a little noise when I pedal. Not too much, but I don't know if I should be looking at something. I have 0 knowledge of bicycle maintenance. What should I be looking for and at?
I tried pulling at things and nothing appears to be too loose.
