Agreed. Quite the circus they're performing to garner public support from wherever they can grab it.
Its' been said before, but it's too bad that the Coyotes don't have more dedicated & passionate fans such as yourself. I'm headed to Phoenix next Friday.
Let me tell you that is much easier to say, than "I'm headed to Winnipeg next Friday".

Did you ever consider that maybe AZ radio doesn't give a #### about GWI, the Coyotes or NHL hockey and Can radio contacted GWI to be on their show?

Isn't it pretty standard to appear on sympathetic media?
Canadian media would be pretty sympathetic to any organization which makes another Canadian NHL team more likely.

2. Hensley & Co. of Phoenix is the third biggest Anheuser Busch (Budweiser) distributor in the U.S., and presumably sells a lot of beer at the Coyotes games. Even people with free tickets in a papered house still drink lots of beer at a hockey game.
3. The Chairman of the Board of Hensley & Co., and largest shareholder, is Cindy McCain (nee Hensley), wife of Senator John McCain.
4. Just follow the money."

I'm afraid that this make perfectly good sense - there HAS TO BE a reason for McCain to back this deal, cause it just the kinda thing that he is 'against' politically...

McCain is a huge supporter of the local teams.. even on nights when we had 7000 he was sitting there in lower bowl seats. He genuinely loves the team and goes quite often.

'scuse me?
Maybe until you're 25 years old. Long term (assuming good driver), you save more under the Alberta private insurer system than in Manitoba.
Example: My car is $2,100 a year in Winnipeg. It's $1,350 here. I'm over the age of 25.

I think GWI is completely right in their anaylsis of the deal and has every right to try and stop it. It's a horrible business deal and bad for the taxpayers. I'd be saying this if it was that bad in Winnpeg or any other Canadian city too. The idea that parking could pay off the bonds is insane, especially for a team that few seem to want to pay to see and keep around anyway.
However, I'm a disappointed with their little circus act. Kinda cheapens their point.

Not to mention if your car gets written off, their valuation is garbage, and you get virtually nothing.

100% agree the circus act is not necessary and the threats are ridiculous.
But the premise that the NHL can reject a legitimate purchaser who is willing to pay a reasonable price for the club on the basis of what appears to be "not playing by their rules" based on personality and ego political disconnections with the NHL and their completely blurry old boys club....... but then they can run off and find a purchaser that is using tax payers dollars and follow through with that... well it just seems wrong to me. If I was an AZ taxpayer, I'd be curious about it too.

If anyone thinks such sweetheart deals don't happen in Canada, take a look at this and understand where the Heritage Savings and Trust fund went. It didn't go to you and I that's for sure.
This is about the pulp and paper mills in Alberta.
Quote:
On June 1/97 restructuring of the Alberta debt was completed and on April 30/97 Millar settled its debt to our province by issuing a $25 MILLION non-interest bearing note payable and cash of $6.5 MILLION. At the same time the $264 MILLION of debt owing to the taxpayers and citizens of Alberta, by way of a loan from The Heritage Trust Fund to Millar Western to build a pulp mill, was written off. Not a single penny was paid by Millar Western on that debt.
|
Quote:
Taxpayers heavily subsidized the Daishowa project in the form of infrastructure items. These items include a bridge, a rail spur, roads etc. The ultimate cost was in the tens of MILLIONS.
|
Quote:
Less than 30 days after signing the audited financial statement of Mar.31/97, the Provincial Government hired a consulting firm to review an offer from Mitsubishi to write-off $140 MILLION.
|
Quote:
In other words do not sell now or you may lose money. Hold on till maturity and you will get the entire principal and accrued interest. The Provincial Government did exactly the opposite and it resulted in a loss to the Alberta tax payers of $140 MILLION.

Yup Vulcan, c'est true. Your example is but a puppy compared to what I believe was going on in AB in the 90s. I think close to 1 Billion $ went astray. Because we never have a change of government, no police investigation is commenced as the next crew just sweep (industrial bulldoze) under the rug.
The big problem with professional sports is the privatization of the the profits and socialization of the losses. When things are good, its "Hey, we're just a business who is doing it right and being rewarded by the market." When things are poor, its "Where would this city be without this product? We have had some - Gasp!! Losses - and if the GOVERNMENT doesn't do something about it, well then the GOVERNMENT must hate this city."
That is the concern about a relocation to The Peg or QC. The owners of these franchises will, sooner or later, make a third-generation welfare recipeint look like a piker when it comes to demanding government handouts.
