I sure loved the drive in movie theatre growing up... You wouldn't get home until 4 or 5am on triple feature night. I remember seeing Doug Flutie there a couple times.
Didn't the Hub Oil explosion close that place down??

As mentioned...drive in movies.
Also:
15c buses and public swimming pools (1970s)
The brewery aquarium
Calgary beer
(not necessarily in that order)

If you could PM some of those pics it would be much appreciated.
Apparently the new Gardens is supposed to cover 2.5 acres...wasn't the old one much bigger than that? Seem to recall it being massive but everything seems big when you are little.

Interesting Fact: Devonian Gardens was voted in Fastforward as one of the most popular places in Calgary for couples to have dangerous liasons (also known as public sex).

When did the theater leave Market Mall?
I remember seeing Lord of the Rings there in 2002.

Yeah I think I saw The Fast and the Furious at the Market Mall theatre as well. The screens were tiny there.

You can always just go to the Chinook Mall food court for that now if you want.

Yup, XL had the Drive Decent stickers. I believe that the new XL Radio has them now too.
What was the controversy? The poor grammar?

Yeah, it was the grammar. It seemed like half the cars had the sticker on their back window, and there was a fuss that something with so much exposure should at least have proper grammar.

After just reading this, I have one question, what year did you attend Father Whelihan?
Meats is a super specific Sundance growing up memory, from about 1988 - 1990. I too share the memory of a guy with the business fortitude to start an awesome candy store, and awful deli.

Mister Soft Drink.
Strawberry soda in Glass bottles, and 5 bucks worth of penny candies was enough rocket fuel to keep you going from noon to midnight.
I still have a few pop crates from there. I should toss them, but I am too attached to them. (Plus they make great foot stool for painting.)

Having lived in Calgary all my life, and now currently in Australia, this thread has made me incredibly home sick.

My Dad was one of the construction workers on Devonian Gardens. He was always proud of that.

You guys sure Brentwood Mall had a theatre? Are you thinking of Northland Village down the street?
Brentwood had a K-Mart, I remember.

They gave random drivers a hundred bucks if you had the sticker on your car.
And drove decently.

I remember passing by the sign announcing the movies all the time - one of those white signs with the removable black letters. The sign was on a brick-walled section of the mall where (I think) Jameson's Pub is now. I've been wrong before, though - may have conflated a bunch of memories into one...?
After a bit of searching, I did find this. Scroll down to the Calgary, Alberta section:
Quote:
[1969-1987] Brentwood Theatre
Brentwood Mall
|
That link hasn't been updated in a while, as it shows the Northland Mall theater as still active:
Quote:
[1988-] Cineplex Odeon Theatres
Northland Village Cinemas
5111 Northland Dr NW #9300
(403) 288-9141
|
The link also reminded me of the Palace theater. I think that's where I saw the Star Wars/Empire Strikes Back double-header. I only remember having a massive headache afterwards, made worse by having to ride in the truck bed of my Uncle's Ford Courier...
