There is no good reason for Mitch Marner to do the Leafs a favour by accepting a trade.
|
It is Marner’s right to simply say ‘no, I’m staying’. No argument there.
Again, and I think this extends well beyond the limits of hockey, but in any given relationship if one party says to the other they don’t wish to continue the relationship, I’d bet the vast majority come to an end.
Another wrinkle to this, and I don’t necessarily think this would happen, but there are other ways for the Leafs to force the issue. What if it’s ’accidentally leaked’ that Marner said no to a trade? Would the Leaf fans turn on him (more than a good portion of them have already)? Utah, or otherwise, might start to look pretty good.

They’d have kept Markstrom if they were serious about competing. That trade didn’t have to happen and they retained. Ownership is on board with a ‘re-tool’ that most fans would call a rebuild. Conroy can keep a couple of vets and still fulfill his public statements about not tearing it to the studs.

Was just told to keep an eye on Morgan Frost as a guy the Flames might be targetting this week.

Flyers seem to be in pretty tough with the cap... maybe Frost with a guy like Johansen or Atkinson.

Frost, 12th OA, and Petersen/Johansen for 28th OA? Philly has quite a bit going on within their cap.

Why would Philly do this? Frost had 41 points and makes $2.1 mil.

Yeah. Frost for 28 maybe. If 12 is in play then Razz is on their radar.

I like this idea, but the cap isn't bad.
Capfriendly does not count IR players as bodies but counts the cap hit in the total, also the total includes LTIR.
They have 20 guys including Risto and about $7 mil cap space once you take out Ellis. They aren't desperate to get out of cap hell.

I think some must be looking at the cap totals and thinking they need to do something or they are screwed. Capfriendly for whatever reason counts IR players cap hit but does not count the player in number of players signed.
So Risto cap is counted but he isn't counted in the 19
Ellis's cap is counted in the total too.
It isn't that bad they can sign depth guys with the $7 mil space they have.

So something like:
12th overall + Frost
Andersson + 28th overall
Would be a good move for Calgary IMO. Don’t know why Philly would do it… thought they were prepared for a rebuild and this would be a move for a team looking to get better right away.

I don't think Tortorella loves Frost. Wasn't he healthy scratched a few times?

Isn’t Frost just an average warm body at this point?
Don’t dislike the player at all. Just don’t understand the love/excitement.

I still think rebuild is their plan, team just played better than expected.
They might view Frost as someone not in the long-term plans and more a secondary guy they just don't want to pay in a year.
Not sure why they don't just dump Atkinson and trade Konecny for picks. Retaining salary on both, returns could be very good.

His final two years of junior he was almost 2ppg. Then in Philly he was initially stuck with low minutes in the bottom six, last couple seasons he's had 48 & 41pts, and that's with Torts breathing down his neck.
I'd say he still has some untapped potential in the NHL, seems like the prime example of someone who could benefit from a change of scenery.

That’s kinda my feeling too, a 25 year old guy with middling stats on a cheap contract. With Kadri, Backlund, Zary(?) and Rooney as centermen already it seems we’ve got the 2nd/3rd line centermen spots covered already.
