But keeping struggling players just means you have a struggling team doesn't it? You hope the struggling player still holds value with other GM's and try to take advantage of them.

Hamilton is a much better player than Brodie, you trade Brodie before Hamilton every time. Brodie is by far the worst defensively of the Flames top 4 Dmen and his offensive contributions are not enough to mitigate his defensive lapses. Trade Brodie for a cost controlled effective winger. Doubt it happens tho

You don't have to look too far north to see why this kind of thinking gets you in a lot of trouble.

No not every time. If Brodie is going to return a reasonable top 6 winger and Hamilton is going to return an elite top line winger who is young you have to consider moving Dougie.
Brodie never sucked under Hartley and has only struggled under Gulutzan and I think it is largely due to playing on the left.
People that want Brodie gone have failed to answer the question of who is the second pair LHD as well. Gulutzan hates playing 2 same handed Dmen together so we have Kulak in the top 4 and our D looks pretty awful.

What struggling player are you talking about? I wouldn't say Brodie is struggling as I feel after two seasons now this is what he is when playing on the left side. If traded and put back on the right side with a solid partner there's no reason he can't get back to where he was pre-Gulutzan.

I like the Brodie-Kadri, Backlund-Cole +1st swaps too much. They must be lopsided.

apples and oranges, but if you compare Brodie and Larson then Larson gets you Hall so since Brodie is still a lot better than Larson he should get you more? And the oil also traded guys because cap trouble too, the Flames would be trading away from a position of strength (D) for help up front. The oil traded from a position of crap to get to a position of crap.
I'm not saying make trades for the sake of making trades but you want to get better and I don't think trading away Hamilton makes the team better (unless like Vinny said you get a top star player who's cost controlled like Barzal, Boeser, Stone, Konecny...) I think a team looking for D will be more likely to overpay so you can probably get a pretty good return on Brodie.

Maybe Brodie for Kadri is lopsided but I think the Backlund deal is extremely fair. Pitt so desperately needs a 3rd line C and Backlund would be amazing in that role. The Pens have been rumored to be looking to ditch Cole who is also a pending UFA and to get a player like Backlund that will cost a 1st+
We definitely downgrade the blueline in the deal but get a suitable long term replacement for Backlund and get back a very valuable pick

Apparently Craig Conroy was on a flight to Ottawa today according to Sens twitter.
Cue the Hoffman rumors.

Hoffman or Stone would be a dream come true. Other than those 2, I don't think anyone is a good fit.

And what happens when Gio starts to decline? Then we have no 1st pairing defensemen. Brodie, away from Gio, or with a declining Gio, isn't a 1st pairing player.
Even if you don't think Hamilton is a 1st pairing guy (I think he is), he certainly has a higher upside than Brodie.

I would want to recoup a 2018 draft pick as well seeing a defenseman carries higher value than a winger but it's definitely something I would investigate.

Hamilton is the biggest chip the Flames have and for that reason they should keep him.

What do we add to Stone tonget Hoffman?
Maybe Ottawa sees acquiring Mike as a way to keep Mark long term?
Obviously a significant + on our end is required but Stone would be the easiest guy to move for how the blueline slots.
Stone, Kylington, Phillips for Hoffman?

Conroy might be talking extension with potential FA. Trying to sell the guy on the city, or getting a sense of what the ask is for an extension.
Stone?

He could also be there to look at junior players. Both the 67s and Olympiques are at home this weekend.
