Would be interesting to know what else was offered along with the 2nd overall.

Holtz would make a lot of sense as well as probably some sort of conditional pick where the Flames get the pick if Tkachuk signs an extension with Jersey

But....even if Tre wanted to I don't think he could have traded Tkachuk today, not if he wants Gaudreau to stay in Calgary. That might be enough to make Johnny walk away from the Flames once and for all.

It depends on what the trade was but I think you trade Tkachuk and that cap hit for Shane Wright.

Personally.

Especially with Gaudreau all hum haw and unsure.

If you think Shane Wright is good enough to step into the NHL next year, and become a #1C sooner rather than later, then sure.

But that is far from a guarantee IMO. He's much more likely to range somewhere from Sam Bennett to Nolan Patrick in my opinion. Time will tell.

It said before the draft got underway, so there was no guarantee that Wright would be available unless they knew who Montreal was taking.

Wright looks like Sam Reinhart, from my very limited viewing.

I’d have gone Juraj too, based on the shot alone. That thing’s an ICBM.

We also need to consider that they didn’t think Wright was that guy - that may be a mistake, but I wouldn’t trade Tkachuk for Sam Reinhart.

Obviously you do for 18 year old Toews, but Monahan was supposed to be Toews, and those two have virtually nothing in common as professionals outside their position and vocal register.

If Rastas source is corrector really doesn’t mean anything. Close to $11 million or $11 million a year counter offer isn’t necessarily a negotiation. It could be a draw this up or I test free agency.

Meet in the middle doesn’t really work when one side holds all the leverage.

The Flamed respect themselves...so one side doesn't have all the leverage.

That's the thing Oiler fans lost the last two decades...respect for themselves.

The franchise is always bigger than any one player. We'll find another way to win.

With that said, he likely signs around 10.25m per season. Then oiler fans can switch to the "paid too much" narrative.

If the reports are true that Calgary said no to 2nd overall, it must mean that:
a) Treliving knows he can extend Tkachuk
Or
b) he knows he can get more for Tkachuk in a trade

Otherwise I don't like it. If Tkachuk is intent on walking as a UFA next summer, 2nd overall and our choice of centres in this draft would have been a nice piece for 1 year of Tkachuk

It's hard to judge not knowing what the full offer was, but yes...if we are sitting here next year in the same situation with Tkachuk as we are right now with Gaudreau we will be wishing we had Cooley/Wright and possibly Holtz instead.

Let's hope Treliving knows what he's doing.

If Johnny walks, not taking this deal will haunt the Flames.

How so? If Johnny walks then I'd rather have Tkachuk under a long term contract at high dollars then anything available in this sub par 2022 draft class. Heck I'd even take Tkachuk under a one year deal and traded next season for any first round pick in 2023 over 2022

Not all 2023 first rounders are going to be better than 2022 2nd overall

Maybe 5

And Tkachuk will be like Johnny this year at the draft . He’ll sign or walk free. You ain’t going to get a pick for him

The goal is to win right now so that appears to be the sole focus of our GM. He likely remains somewhat confident based on the conversations he has had that he can sign these players but if he does have to pivot I hate to say it but he will make win now moves in my opinion.

True.

This situation still fundamentally revolves around whether Gaudreau wants to be a Flame, or not. If he does then both sides will find a number that works. The Flames, I’m sure, have let Gaudreau know that they will top any 7 year offer he will receive on the open market. If Gaudreau’s intent is to squeeze every last buck out of the Flames, they probably should let him walk.

Thankfully, Treliving has a pretty strong history of delivering fair contracts

I don't see how having $20 million AAV committed to 2 wingers who didn't win anything with the Flames at $13 million helps the Flames to win now. If what Garrioch reporting is true it is a huge missed opportunity to rebalance the roster and get a young potential 1C or a potential 1D
