CC what age group are you in? I think you're out of touch with the 18-35 age group. I am in the 30-35 group and everyone that I know in this age group is voting Nenshi. Also many that are 40+.

Stereotype much? All 18-25 are into drugs and watching Dexter? Seriously??!

While I won't base my design solely on a Q&A with the Calgary Sun, there is a clear distinction between Jim Stevenson and Gary Tremblay in the way they answered the questions. One might have a bit more appeal to youth than the other. I'll leave that exercise to the reader:
Gary Tremblay: http://www.calgarysun.com/news/calga.../15073456.html
Jim Stevenson: http://www.calgarysun.com/news/calga.../15160866.html
Helene Laracque and PErvais Iqbal MIA.
|
Gary Tremblay's responses remind me of Creed on The Office.

Ward 3 is too big, the communities west and east of Deerfoot have very different issues that are facing them.

When you have an perceived inaccuracy in polling in a municiple election, I almost write off half of that group as non voters.
Should be interesting, I would prefer to see a fresh face running the city. McIver really lost my vote when he sided against the city auditor, I'm still not sure if I'm sold on Nemshi, because I keep having flash backs to the Obama campaign, and I wonder about his level of execution combined with his lack of experience.
I can't vote for Higgin's because I like substance in my candidates.

Blinky voted to punt the auditor because she was failing to keep up with her responsibilities. Thats the reason the council decided to fire her.

I've never bought into that reasoning. It was a convienient excuse. She started talking about undocumented spending and the possibility of fraud and she goes from Rock Star to lazy ner do well.

She uncovered $750 million in cost overruns. I shudder to think what a "competent" auditor would have found.

And? When an independent accounting firm says her group only applied 2/11 basic auditing standards can their work even be trusted? It would have been worse optics to vote against firing her. Everyone would be complaining that he supports an incompetent auditor. Its a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.

Question is why the audit committee (which McIver is on) took so long to even notice that all contracts had gone over budget. Surely you wouldn't have even needed an auditor to notice this. He and much of council just simply don't know the questions to ask. Same deal with the Eau Claire affordable housing fiasco (also a committee which oversees such matters that McIver sits on that missed the boat completely).

Not sure how the city's procurement system works, but change orders will make intial budgets go over in my company. It sounds like they werent documenting and trending their budgets for the changes. It wouldnt surprise me if theres some shady things behind the scenes, but its hard to believe the auditor when she isnt following basic protocol.

I don't doubt this.
I've done some consulting to a government agencies, and have been in all day meetings with 8-12 people going over the wording/semantics/grammar of documents. What a waste of time it was, I felt guilty just sitting there billing for what was clearly a waste of taxpayer money.

Yeah, the story mentioned how Jim Stevenson initially thought it was just a sign recycling/cost cutting measure, but then noticed that all he new materials also said "Re-Elect"

This Metro article from last week echoes the same sentiment.

I'd love it if I could meet some CP'ers! I've been involved in setting up a meet and greet for Nenshi tomorrow night at 5:30 at Club Sapien. Although it is a gay club but it is open to anyone to come out. Sapien has a lounge feel and has great food! It is where Mile One used to be - 11th St and 10th Ave SW.

We have a $2500 surcharge for meetings. Strangely it's not really a deterrent.

Public servants have always been the least efficient of any work groups out there. I'm sure that's a surprise to no one. At my work we always neglect to call City employees on Fridays because we know they've mailed it in for the weekend and don't really get much done. It's a better use of your time if you call on Monday.

I feel like I'm constantly defending City employees here, but believe me - that cliche is tired and overworked. There are plenty of hard-working people who have ALOT on their plate and are going as fast as they can to do a good job for both internal clients and citizens alike.
There are those types who just give up and don't care, but that exists in both the public and private sector. Maybe somewhat more in the public sector, but its not a problem exclusive to government work.
