That was an incredible race by Whitfield. My heart was racing watching that, what an incredible finish for him!

Another solid 3 medal day for Canada. That brings us to 12 medals and AVK hasn't even raced yet.

That Whitfield race was one of the best moments of the Olympics thus far for me. That finish was all heart. When he fell back 10-15m going up that hill there wasn't any strategy there. He just dug deep and found an extra gear.

So, I am pretty happy with the results by our Canadian team. 12 medals for our country with an often critisized Olympic program. The US has ten times the population so if you extrapolate that, we would have 20 gold, 60 silver and 40 bronze for an Olympic leading 120 medals and if we had the population that China has (40 times greater), we would have 80 gold, 240 silver and 160 bronze!

(okay let the comments about Australia flood in)

Australia's a summer country who barely competes in the Winter Olympics (2 medals in Turino). Canada has to split their funding between the two Olympics and that makes a big difference when competing with these Summer specialized countries.

Canada is now tied for 12th in total medals.

Medal #13: Bronze in Women's 100m Hurdles for Priscilla Lopes-Schliep.

2nd through 6th place were all within 0.02 seconds of each other.

Wow, what a race there, kind of felt bad for the American who stumbled but if she hadn't, Priscilla wouldn't have won the bronze.

The Aussies have 20 medals in swimming - take those away, and they are doing about the same as Canada in all the other events.

Simon was awesome - all heart.

Shouldnt it be a tie for silver in the womens 100m hurdles? According to ESPN's results 2nd and 3rd had a time of 12.64.

Pretty amazing how close all of the racers were

cbc as well

They have cameras for the track events that take something like 1000 pictures a second or so, so they can tell down to miniscule amounts who finished when.

Between the men's triathlon outfits that were so tight you could tell the guys' religions, and the diving this morning, my wife has taken a sudden interest in these Olympics.

So now Canada has 13 medals - that's one more than the performance at Athens, right? Not bad at all. I wonder how many 4th places Canada's had at these games.

Just another note for whitefield,

What a race, stays with the youngens from Columbia or whatever and then throws the hat down and says get it on.

Also for the mens tampoline what a preformance.

Ranked 12 coming into the Olympics and gets silver. Finally a Canadian Athlete who not just exceeds expectations but kicks them square in the balls and says F U

Priscilla Lopes-Schliep was only ranked 9th going into the Olympics and was hardly considered a medal contender as well.

Last night's action

Just can't say enough about Simon Whitfield. Even more amazing finish than in Sydney, given that the runners he passed were among the best in the world.
I haven't had time to see replays of the other medals yet, but I heard yesterday that Burnett was going with the most difficult routine he had ever performed; way to go hard after a medal. And hurdles, man, that's nice after Felicien's disaster last time around. Despatie, the field has grown so much tougher since his first Olympics, but he's become so consistent.

And lost in all of that is the fact that van Koeverden rowed a world record time in qualifying for the final. Our first world record of these games.

Canadians going for medals Tonight

Right now it really feels like every Canadian in competition for medals has a shot.

Pairs synchro swimming
Women's softball - if Canada beats Australia, they're guaranteed gold or silver (most likely silver, but it would be great to see Canada beat the US in the very last Olympic softball game ever played).
If they lose, the bronze game goes in the evening
Ivett Gonda in taekwando
Varanes and Gantry in wrestling

Other favorites and hopefuls in action tonight

Samantha Cools gets started in BMX.
Emelie Heymans in 10m diving.
Eric Lamaze and the other showjumpers have an inspection.
Reed in the 800m track

Agreed but apart from the Russian no one really "choked" on the tramp.

But yes another unexpected medal and great preformance.
