Bumping this before it hits page 2.

Also just got an email notice from q107 saying Joe Satriani is coming to town in October.

Great pick Tim. I still think it is their strongest record, but I do like all of them.

Quick question...how do you guys quote from Wikipedia and bring the links along with the quote? I am using a Mac, and it doesn't seem to work when I simply highlight, copy, and paste.

with my next pick, I'll choose keyboardist extraordinaire, the 5th Beatle himself Billy Preston.

William Everett Preston (September 2, 1946June 6, 2006) was an American soul musician from Houston, Texas, raised mostly in Los Angeles, California. In addition to his successful, Grammy-winning career as a solo artist, Preston collaborated with some of the greatest names in the music industry, including the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Nat King Cole, Little Richard, Ray Charles, George Harrison, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Sam Cooke, King Curtis, Sammy Davis Jr., Sly Stone, Aretha Franklin, the Jackson 5, Quincy Jones, Richie Sambora, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. He played the Fender Rhodes electric piano and the Hammond organ on the Get Back sessions in 1969.
Although Preston is one of several people sometimes credited as a "Fifth Beatle", he is one of two non-Beatles (the other being Tony Sheridan) to receive label performance credit on any Beatles record.

I last saw him live July 11, 1990, I don't think he's been back since. I am definitely not missing this.

With our 7th round selection, BF & the BFFs are extremely excited to add to our formidable stable of musical icons: the greatest living rock star, the purest personification of rock'n'roll-as-lifestyle, universally respected by the most extreme elements of punk, metal and rock... Founding member, bassist and frontman of legendary British metal gods Motörhead..... Lemmy!!

We will place Lemmy in the category of Male Singer, with the option of flipping him into the bass category at a later time.

Quote:
For many, heavy metal is personified by a single person -- unforgettable Motörhead bassist/shouter Lemmy...His appearance, facial moles, mutton chops, and gravelly voice, have made him an instantly recognisable cult figure... Motörhead's overwhelmingly loud and fast style of heavy metal was one of the most groundbreaking styles the genre had to offer in the late '70s. Though the group's leader, Lemmy Kilminster, had his roots in the hard-rocking space rock band Hawkwind, Motörhead didn't bother with his old group's progressive tendencies, choosing to amplify the heavy biker rock elements of Hawkwind with the speed of punk rock. Motörhead wasn't punk rock -- they formed before the Sex Pistols and they loved the hell-for-leather imagery of bikers too much to conform with the safety-pinned, ripped T-shirts of punk -- but they were the first metal band to harness that energy and, in the process, they created speed metal and thrash metal. Unlike many of their contemporaries, Motörhead continued performing into the next century. Although the band changed its lineup many, many times -- Lemmy was its only consistent member -- they never changed their raging sound.

...And related, some genius has decided to make the most awesome movie ever, which would obviously be a documentary about Lemmy. Watch the trailer here:

For my next pick I will finally fill my UK category with the original supergroup Cream.

Quote:
Although Cream was only together for a little more than two years, their influence was immense, both during their late-'60s peak and in the years following their breakup. Cream was the first top group to truly exploit the power-trio format, in the process laying the foundation for much blues-rock and hard rock of the 1960s and 1970s. It was with Cream, too, that guitarist Eric Clapton truly became an international superstar.

For our next pick we choose Creedance Clearwater Revival in the category of US West.

Quote:
Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) was an American roots rock band who gained popularity in the late 1960s and early '70s with a string of successful songs from multiple albums released in 1968, 1969 and 1970.
The group consisted of singer, lead guitarist, and primary writer John Fogerty, rhythm guitarist Tom Fogerty, bass player Stu Cook, and drummer Doug Clifford. Their musical style encompassed rock and roll and so-called swamp rock genres.
CCR's music is still a staple of American and worldwide radio airplay and often figures in various media.

Moving along, our next choice in the Male Singer category is James Brown.

Quote:
James Joseph Brown, Jr. (May 3, 1933December 25, 2006), commonly referred to as "The Godfather of Soul", "King of Funk", and "The Hardest Working Man in Show Business", was an American entertainer. He is recognized as one of the most influential figures in 20th century popular music and was renowned for his shouting vocals, feverish dancing and unique rhythmic style. As a prolific singer, songwriter, bandleader, and record producer, Brown was a pivotal force in the evolution of gospel and rhythm and blues into soul and funk. He left his mark on numerous other musical genres, including rock, jazz, disco, dance and electronic music, reggae and hip hop. Brown's music also left its mark on the rhythms of African popular music, such as afrobeat, jùjú and mbalax, and provided a template for go-go music.
Brown began his professional music career in 1953, and rose to fame during the late 1950s and early 1960s on the strength of his thrilling live performances and string of smash hits. In spite of various personal problems and setbacks he continued to score hits in every decade through to the 1980s. In addition to his acclaim in music, Brown was a presence in American political affairs during the 1960s and 1970s, noted especially for his activism on behalf of fellow African Americans and the poor. During the early 1980s, Brown's music helped to shape the rhythms of early hip-hop music, with numerous groups looping or sampling his funk grooves and turning them into what became hip hop classics and the foundations of the music genre.
Brown was recognized by a plethora of titles, including Soul Brother Number One, Sex Machine, Mr. Dynamite, The Hardest Working Man in Show Business, Minister of The New New Super Heavy Funk, Mr. Please Please Please, The Boss, and the best-known, the Godfather of Soul.

I know... I saw them when they rolled through here 4-5 years ago at the Whiskey. When I talk about life-altering concerts, the conversation begins and ends with Motorhead.

And I should add, I had a very real fear you were going to pick him RIGHT before me. I was giddy that you didn't!

I guess it's as good a time as any for my next pick. From Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada I bring you Wintersleep!

Earlier this year I went to their show at the Ballroom. I went in only slightly familiar with their work but came out as a huge fan. One of my favorites gigs I have ever attended and you too would do well to check them out live.

Tour video just before their rise to greater prominence.

With our 8th round selection, BF & the BFFs are pleased to select, in the Canada category: rootsy folk-rock kings, quintessential neo-traditionalists, the group that helped shepherd a continent through turbulent times, the band that required no name, choosing instead to let their music prove their status as far beyond mere disciples of Dylan, The Band!!!

Quote:
For about six years, from 1968 through 1975, the Band was one of the most popular and influential rock groups in the world, their music embraced by critics (and, to a somewhat lesser degree, the public) as seriously as the music of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Their albums were analyzed and reviewed as intensely as any records by their one-time employer and sometime mentor Bob Dylan. And for a long time, their personalities were as recognizable individually to the casual music public as the members of the Beatles.
Quote:
The Band, more than any other group, put rock and roll back in touch with its roots. With their ageless songs and solid grasp of musical idioms, the Band reached across the decades, making connections for a generation that was, as an era of violent cultural schisms wound down, in desperate search of them. They projected a sense of community in the turbulent late Sixties and early Seventies - a time when the fabric of community in the United States was fraying. Guitarist Robbie Robertson drew from history in his evocative, cinematic story-songs, and the vocal triumvirate of bassist Rick Danko, drummer Levon Helm and keyboardist Richard Manuel joined in rustic harmony and traded lines in rich, conversational exchanges. Multi-instrumentalist Garth Hudson provided musical coloration in period styles that evoked everything from rural carnivals of the early 20th century to rock and roll revues of the Fifties… In an era of divisive politics, the Band produced music that crossed generational and historical borders.

Love the Band - had them and another band down for Canada. Now, you made my choice easier.

Yeah, they are fantastic. Always a crowd pleaser... Figured I'd better snap em up quick to avoid having to draft Harlequin or Trooper in the Canadian category!

So I'm thinking that I made my last choice in a little haste. If anybody wants Frusciante, I'll let him go for a pick...well virtually whenever. He's not who I want as my guitarist I don't think. So unless Iron Fist Bettman will let me move him to instrumental soloist or something, he's available to whoever would like him!
