Probably for the best if the flames don’t pay the likely price to get Byram. I really don’t want to give up Zary. Plus the flames have several defencemen in the system that I have high hopes for. Even left handed defencemen like Morin and Soloviov. Would rather be patient and not rush into acquiring a defenceman that wants a $9 million AAV contract.

One could argue Johnston is available but then you could also argue that Wolf is also a piece that a team can dream to acquire.

Johnston is their best young piece he is a building block for them. Diss made a point that a year ago no one said Robertson would be available and due to them getting Rantanen things have changed. I suppose if the Stars flipped Robertson for McTavish that could result in Johnston maybe being available so you never know?

Realistically it is very high level fantasy stuff but most of the trades here are.

In terms of realistic targets from Dallas, Robertson would look good here.

We just drafted two centres in the first round, plus we’ve re-signed Frost and also have Kadri and Zary. Not saying any of them are better than Wyatt, but Dallas isn’t trading us Wyatt, so that’s irrelevant.

Positions aside, the one thing we absolutely need is goal scoring - and Robertson does that better than most, and he’s only 25.

Craig’s not looking to sell the farm nor pay 9M a season for Byram but fits the team if they move Andersson which they’re still trying to do.

Craig knows the noise is loud now and becoming a distraction around the team.
I very much doubt Andersson is here much longer.

The Blues make a ton of sense and they were in a unique spot to execute a retool and I think it is going to work for them. Having Thomas and Kyrou allowed them to do this retool in the first place. Moving RoR and Tarasenko in 22/23 allowed them to add 2 extra 1st rounders in 2023 including their 10th overall. They bolster their prospect pool and then last year made the offer sheets to add Broberg and Holloway which proved to be great moves. Adding Byram to this team gives them a nice young core with some solid prospects. I could see them shipping Schenn out eventually and continuing to rebuild on the fly

That seems about right, because Conroy could just pay Andersson $9M instead. IMO Byram's next contract is going to be similar to Peterka, and the $9M figure is thrown out in the context of an offersheet(1st + 2nd + 3rd) which might make sense for a contender.

Is there anything new on the Kadri front? And have the Flames been approached about any of their wingers now that Ehlers has signed?

The guys talk in group chat constantly, they’re actually all really close and do a lot of things together all summer long. It’s quite surprising

By 'distraction to the team' I can also imagine that loosely means the org in general, which I could see distracts the front office from prioritizing other things.

Other than whatever returns come via Andersson getting moved I’d be surprised if there are any trades the Flames pull off for a year or so.

The plan seems to be keep drafting via the picks acquired from dumping all of our vers. Keep a small core of vets to mentor younger players. Stay away from free agency.

I think the plan will change in a year or two after the younger players have has an audition and they know what their gaps are. Guys like Backlund will also have to be replaced.

I doubt there are a lot of UFAs that would want to come here at this point anyway. Until we’re more competitive. Hopefully Andersson can find us a young center.
