Its simply a deal the Jays had to make. I'm glad they did

Totally agree, it was either sign him or rebuild
As no other key free agent would look at the Jays, if Vladdy left.

It also sends a message to prospects that we they are willing to sign their own players.
That's a good thing

It’s probably a blessing he’s had a slow start. The final nudge to get this across the line.
This is a big deal to keep him, and the Jays had to do it.
They’ve been burned with the big free agents but this is a feather in the cap for the franchise to be able to retain a talent and brand like Vladdy.

Don't forget the totally legal t-ball bats that the Yankees are using. Get Vlad one early enough and that's triple digit Homer's.

Agree with all those folks on here saying it was a signing that needed to happen for a lot of reasons beyond Vladdy's baseball service to the team. In the AL East there's always going to be two other high payroll teams to compete with. It's imperative for being able to sign other high quality free agents, compete, sell Sportsnet subscriptions, tickets, and Jays merchandise that the team establishes that with the largest TV market in baseball that it can and will compete on cash with the top teams in the league.

They had to do this signing. The relevance they've spent the last 20 years building up to this would have evaporated. Especially since the big FAs used them as leverage and signed elsewhere afterwards.
Hopefully Vlad can keep his end of the bargain now.

I wonder if they take a shot at resigning Bo
The relationship is very …. Weird
Reports for years that he won’t entertain signing , but when asked he says the Jays haven’t reached out yet.
Wouldn’t be the response I would have expecting from someone who has told them he wouldn’t entertain signing

I think there may be some myths here. The Toronto market is strong. People just need some hope and a good story, and don’t like bs messaging. So losing him, if a good return came back, would’ve been just fine.
To those saying they shouldn’t care about what happens in ten years, then why shouldn’t they have given him 20 year deal? We should always care about what management does because it screws over the next generation. It’s like a politician screwing the next generation over. In this case I don’t blame Atkins and crew as it was likely a public pressure thing that pushed ownership further, but you know with whomever the next star is, they’ll look to sign him up early, like Whitt Jr. They messed up bigtime to get it to this point and sign him for his max. If he wants to be a legend he has to live up to the expectations and after year ten continue to be a starter. He bent management over, and that’s fine, but he has to live up to high expectations that he set by signing this deal. It’s all on him now. If he doesn’t live up to expectations and fans boo, he’s to blame.

You keep harping on this good return like it was an option .
There was no option for a good return this year . That ship sailed before last season
And 35 million isn’t actually a ton of money , and certainly won’t be in 10 years
Stars being signed don’t kill high spending teams . And the Jays are showing they are going to be a top spending team
Now they need to start developing players - especially pitchers or non of it matters
This deal is less % of payroll then the Wells deal

Runner on 1st and 3rd and a comebacker don’t you send him ? Isn’t 1st and 2nd one out better than a double play ?
Plus if you get in a rundown you can get 2nd and 3rd
I don’t get it ….
