Dallas gets a player for $1.2M cap that almost every team in the league, certainly playoff bound teams, want desperately. And they didn't have to give up much at all...that's why it's an A for them.
Pretty much it. This trade, like the Zadorov trade, made no impact for the Flames other than to say these players never left for free. Lindholm haul evened things out on an overall scheme of the trades with Canucks. The Tanev trade still leaves a bit of a bitter taste with that retained salary.
Remember when the Flames could squeeze a second out of a team for Mike Cammalleri at the deadline even though he was having a good season?
The value is what the value is. And the value is very similar to previous deals for similar Dmen. Again - personally I think Tanev should be worth more. But the market decides that.
I suspect Conroy re-canvassed the interested teams and had clarity that no 1st was forthcoming. So he might have got a better condition on the second pick, or even a later pick thrown in. But you are risking that the market shifts, as other dmen become available, or Tanev becomes injured.

NHL Network, just wow, where do they get these idiots.
"I'll need all my university degrees to figure out how this retained salary works."
"It looks like they've found a way to retain more than 50%"
"There's geniuses at work for these teams that find ways to make trades happen.
Then he says this trade might trigger a Flames selloff
Jesus, it’s THE NHL Network. This is not some rando who usually talks MLB and Golf for most of the year. He should be fired on the spot. Publicly proven he’s obviously not qualified for his job.
Also I love seeing the Flames with 9 picks in this draft.
The last time the Flames had 9 picks?
2016: they walked away with Matthew Tkachuk, Dillon Dube, Adam Fox. They also had other high potential guys like Matthew Phillips and Tyler Parsons.
More bullets means more success. It's proven over and over again.

Oh well. We got some cap savings. A second round pick. A young dman that may or may not turn into anything for an older player at the tail end of his career that more than likely wasn’t coming back this summer.
Better than nothing and an opportunity for someone else.
Hanifin and Markstrom are the big poker chips. I have a feeling Markstrom isn’t going anywhere.
Seems like a pretty underwhelming return to be honest. That is going to be a very late 2nd, the 3rd is an extreme longshot and the prospect seems like he has 4d upside in a best case scenario. Don't really understand why you would take this deal now rather than wait, it's not like more d are coming on the market
But I do like that Conroy is moving these guys for futures and rebuilding.
Braced for a bit of a disappointing return on hanifin now after this and the recent comments in the media

So now 2nd rounders dont matter? Just skip the draft. It's 23 games of retained salary that won't impact the Flames at all

If Calgary was in Dallas position and acquired Tanev 75% retained for a second and a B prospect the wizard gifs would be on full display.
It's a mediocre return for Tanev given the reported interest. Which is fine. It just doesn't make a lot of sense to accept a mediocre deal over a week before the deadline.

That's because Dallas is in a much different position than the Fames currently are.
We are sellers and we got a pretty standard return for a rental top 4 Dman.
They are buyers and got a very important piece to help them in their playoff run.
It's not a mediocre return, it's pretty much what you see every year.
It was a pretty fair deal for both sides, and exactly what you'd expect both sides to be doing right now.

That's a good point, the market dictates the offers.
Still the Flames got younger with a player they feel has strong fundamentals.
We have a coach that seems to be working really well with the young
core defenseman we have coming through the ranks. My guess is the Flames feel this guy has a good chance of developing within our system. We've got good skating defenseman that can jump in, but having a solid stay home defenseman that makes simple plays is it good complimentary piece. I really like that this coaching group is really looking at the finer details of what's really needed.

By all accounts the market wasn’t there. Conroy and company must have known that holding off an extra 8 days wasn’t going to enhance the offer or return a first round pick. Better make a trade your happy with then risk injury by waiting, especially if they could sense this was as good as it gets.
