Honestly, kind of hard to blame him.

So then do the right thing and quit.
If he didn't believe in the roster he shouldn't have coached them.

This is a complete mis-characterization of what's happening in the game.
Hockey culture has been very toxic in places, where abuse and treating people below a level of standard respect has been tolerating for far too long.

Minimizing it down to what you do above, is being willfully blind to very real concerns about what has been happening in the game, including with some coaches.

Damn.

Single-handedly cost the Flames a point.

Someone should've contained that midget.

And despite all those fancy stats the Caps coach played him in a 4th line role, 3rd least ice time on the team.

Why are the Caps and Carbury holding him back?

Why? For flipping off an organization that never gave him a chance, with a long history of poor development and decisive lack of long-term vision? The Flames allowed him to walk so they could pick up AJ Greer on waivers and pay Coleman $5 million to sit on his ass and contribute nothing.

Good on Phillips for getting the hell out while he still could. Seems to work out for most.

Wait, who wins here at the end of the day?

Not you, if you're a Flames fan. We all lose.

AJ Greer was a fantastic 4th line pick up and has nothing to do with Philips.

Point being, there was a spot wide open on the Flames roster that Phillips passed over because the organization jerked him around for years. He knew that spot was going to some no-name veteran because that's how the Flames operate. Blame Treliving, blame Sutter, blame whoever. But he looked more engaged than I've ever seen Kadri or any other notable Flames players since this disaster of a roster was assembled and left unchanged over the summer.

I'd rather pay to watch that than the collection of geezers and mercenaries we've got.

Nope. I don't know where you heard that. Everything we saw was we only offered him a two way AHL/NHL so he wisely took the NHL team who would give him a shot.

That says the Flames offered a 2-year deal, not 2-way.

Scorp said this early in this thread:

Presumably he has a source.

Edit: Ah, this tweet claims it was a hybrid:
