I think this post tells us a lot more about you than Akim Aliu.

Why would he need to hire a lawyer at all? Can you sue someone for calling you something 10 years ago?

That he sought out a lawyer who has experience working for professional athletes who have experienced racism and discrimination in the workplace, as well as an ensuing media circus? Seems like a smart move to me.

I dunno, but Bill Peters could conceivably sue Akim, no?

If he makes a few dollars participating in an anti-racism campaign, then I say more power to him.
He doesn't have Kaepernick's profile of course, but Aliu could become an advocate on the level of a Sheldon Kennedy or Theoren Fleury but in a different vein.
Sounds like a good post-hockey career option.

Does he need a high profile lawyer to be able to be that advocate, if that's what he really wants?
Kaepernick's lawyer, new as of this year, is just a celeb lawyer, same guy who Defending Jesse Smollett all the way back to Michael Jackson and many celeb cases in between. Kaepernick has already settled his formal collusion grievance with the league. So this representation now is more promotional in nature then about a specific case.
Therefore, IMO if Aliu's intention from this situation is to take this as a serious opportunity to examine the culture of hockey from a civil rights view and further that message to the league, he could make a better decision by hiring a high profile civil rights lawyer to assist, not take on a lawyer to the stars. He already has representation from the stories earlier in the week.

If Peters intentionally torpedoed his career is their a chance he’s looking for lost potential earnings?

Someone must know an awful lot about the attorney Aliu just hired to feel justified in having an opinion on his decision. To be questioning his motivation and to recommend he hire some high profile civil rights lawyer to further an anti racism agenda is taking back seat driving to a whole other level.

If Aliu was good enough to play in the NHL he’s be playing. This is all sour grapes from a malcontent loser. My takeaway for all this is Peters got fired for calling rap music n*** music. He apologized. It was 10 years ago. Is he banned from the NHL for life for one bad decision? There isn’t evidence he used the n word on any other occasion. Seriously, wtf?

I think this looks at it the wrong way.
Peters had an NHL career because 10 years ago no one stood up to him. He likely would have been fired 10 years ago and not have had the same career he would have had.
So really Peters came out ahead by the 10 year delay between incident and punishment.

You don’t have to look very hard to see that the type of person who needs to bend over backwards to criticise Akim or blame the victim is the same type of person who thinks “n##### s###” isn’t such a bad thing to say.
Same type of people who go on arguing about how this was all Akim’s nefarious plan from the start. “Yeah I guess he should be fired but AA ruined a good man’s career for profit because he was a bitter loser!” — the narratives keep popping up. There are people who genuinely think Akim is the bad guy here. Just ask yourself why that is.

Yup GGG beat me to it, but if this became public 10 years ago, Peters' career as a professional hockey coach would have likely been over at that time.
It would have been likely he would never been offered a high profile coaching job in the AHL, NHL, or Hockey Canada with the stigma attached to the situation.
