Rather than Elliot, isn't Mason a better option as a UFA? Haven't heard or looked at what he would cost given his solid 3 out of 4 years and last year's poor showing.
At this point I am assuming Treliving covered all of the bases including exploring the Ufa's like Mason. Discovered through his work there's was no viable option and made the Smith trade.
Smith is good. Borderline great. At least this coming season hell be adapting to the new structure behind players familiar with the coaching. Should be a much easier transition for him this leading to a much improved start for the Flames.
I really don't like this trade. Hickey is a great prospect and a potential 2nd rounder? Ugh.
Doesn't really seem like we got a deal here.

Yup. No matter what the players say there would be an air of doubt over Elliott for the players on this roster.

He blew it. Plain and simple.
He almost recovered after that terrible start and had redeemed himself, but he seemed to burn out and lose it mentally, and after that playoff performance how could a GM ever bring that guy back?
I'd like to see Rittich get a shot at the back up spot. Let Gillies be the starter in the AHL and reward Rittich for stepping up and having a fantastic season (and outplaying Gillies). I really just don't know how much more Rittich could have done last season to earn a shot at the back up position. By that I mean having the Flames leave an actual spot open. If they sign Nilsson or something like that then I think the plan is for that goalie to fill the spot and it would take something extraordinary to displace them.
NHL:
Smith
Rittich
AHL:
Gillies
McCollum
ECHL:
Parsons
Mcdonald
I don't believe that Parsons will end the season in the ECHL, but it'd be a good way to get him a lot of starts as a rookie.

For anyone tbat loves this trade Convince me how a 35 year old Elliott goalie is a better situation than a 32 year old Elliott calibre of goalie?
Mike Smith and Brian Elliott are pretty much the same level of goalie that is a fact.
Why should anyone bother trying? The arguments have already been stated.
These 2 goaltenders are not equal. Elliott had a ton of question marks before the Flames even acquired him. Then blues traded him after going deep into the playoffs. Doesn't that ring a bell at all? The blues also lost confidence in him and acquired Ryan Miller and Martin Broduer to play over him.
Mike Smith made the 2014 Olympic mens team, so clearly some high level executives thought he was pretty good. He outperformed Elliott despite being on a much inferior roster. He also steals a lot of games for his team whereas Elliott stole almost none for us. He sank us in the playoffs and he almost cost us our season with his poor play early on. Smith was the MVP of his team last year and Elliott wasn't even close. I'd say the 2 are quite different and I haven't even delved deep into the stats.
That was 2014 (3 years ago) for Smith. A 32 year old Mike Smith. Check out Elliott's astounding stats for 2015, ya that WAS Elliott. Neither are what they were. Like I said Treliving did not win this trade. Smith does not improve the Flames He does not weaken the Flames either. This if anything is a band aid trade and PHX comes out on top simply because the 2nd.

Smith is a proven starter. Elliot isn't.
Smith doesn't have a history of melting down in big games. Elliot does.

If they do decide to go with a kid as a backup, it will likely rotate between Gillies and Rittich where they will take turns as backup in the NHL and starter in the AHL.
Smith seems like a nice guy, well-spoken guy. My only issue with that interview is that I find it really strange that he never just comes out and says that he can help them win the Stanley Cup. Maybe I am reading too much into it, but I wonder if some of that comes from playing for a struggling franchise for so long that the goal of winning the Cup doesn't even really enter a player's mind.
Doesn't matter what the cost is, bad goaltending is bad goaltending. Elliott had 1 year to prove that he could be a #1 goalie and he mucked it up royally.
Getting a bad goalie on a cheap deal still leaves you with a bad goalie, so I don't get your thought process at all.
Regardless of the cost of the pick to re-sign Elliott, unfortunately I dont see any way you could bring that guy back after last season.
He had every opportunity to win the position and likely a really nice contract and he constantly blew it.
His start was atrocious, about as bad as one could imagine, his consistency was terrible he was either lights out or complete garbage and he just couldnt be counted on.
You cant bring that back. Not after the way it ended.
It will be interesting to see what comes of Brian Elliott. but his last 'highlight' that teams will be watching is not a flattering one.
