The only reason I don't like it is what that second rounder could have been used for as currency at the draft. You package up that second and next year's first or second and it could land you someting unreal that wasn't available at the trading deadline.
I mean I know that's a stretch, but we saw it here with Hamilton.
That said hope Lazar can find his potential here. I haven't watched him enough at the NHL level to know if hes even shown flashes of his junior career.

Oilers suck.
I really hated this trade when it was first announced, but I've warmed up to it ever so slightly since. I'm now firmly in the "neutral" category now. The second-rounder could be anything... it could even be a Lazar!

For those who can't remember, this isn't Lazar all excited about being on the Flames. This is Lazar's personality, if anyone remembers his personal interviews even as Captain of the Canadian Jr. team.
Lazar has great wheels and a non-stop motor. He is also physical, and has scoring upside. I think going into the draft, he was probably thought of having a ceiling of a 2nd line center. Things haven't worked out for him thus far, but this is a really good gamble to take.
Know what we really miss on this team? Someone like Paul Byron. He was fast and had a non-stop motor, he was physical, and he was a great forechecker/pk'er with scoring upside. Lazar to me is Paul Byron in a bigger package. That's pretty damn good.
I don't care if it is a strong draft or a weak draft - Lazar is a good prospect to bank on for having a turn-around (as long as the Flames work with him on his hygiene - no more eating food found on the floor).
What did this accomplish for the Flames today?
It added speed. That is an area that you can probably point to as having decreased in the last couple of years since the Flames have been trying to get bigger. Lazar has good speed. I really think he will start blossoming on the Flames next season.
As for now - I don't know who you subtract to fit him into the lineup. Rotating with Chiasson and Bouma I guess. He just needs playing time, and that is difficult to find right now on the Flames. That's my only concern with this trade. Really love that the Flames acquired him though - solid win in my books.
As for Jokipakka - meh. All season he has been wildly inconsistent. Maybe he just doesn't fit into the system any longer. I don't know. He just wasn't getting the job done at all. Wideman, Kulak and Wotherspoon should be more than enough depth heading into the playoffs. I am good with that. Kostka adds to that as well I guess, but I don't think we will here about him after today, I am thinking.

I bet if we held on to this years, next years, the year after and the year after that, we could package it up get something really really really amazing.

So where would he slot in. If I'm GG i would ease em in there plus we are on a 5 game winning streak it's hard to justify making a lineup change when we've been rolling 4 deep lately.
Looking at the Flames roster, Lazar is our 2nd heaviest forward, notwithstanding he's only 6'0".
He's within 6 pounds of Brower as heaviest on the team.
I know they list Ferly at 208 but I find it hard to believe he isn't about 222 the way guys go flying after he hits them, and just how he looks out there compared to other guys. He looks thicker than 208, but I could be wrong.
A speedy forward is something the Flames are desperately lacking. If he can be a fast crashing two-way forward with leadership, chip in as a support player from any of the top three lines he should fit well.
Being a right handed shot, ability to play wing or center is a good fit too.

Craig Conroy 2.0. Many of us remember how infectious Craig's enthusiasm was for the Flames in 03-04 run. Look forward to Lazar interviews during one of our long playoff runs someday!
This kid oozes character.
Another buy low scenario with the Mono year Curtis has had.
Right shot RW is such a crucial organizational weakness that makes this trade important to our rebuild.
Its an "I like it" trade for me.
I have no worries about leaving Brouwer as the unprotected forward at expansion draft. If LV wants to take a then 32 year old at 4.5 million/yr playing 3RW or 4RW. So be it. It just gives us more cap room going forward.

At first I felt that the 2nd rounder was a steep price and probably still is. But if you also take into consideration the Flames had 2 extra draft picks (2nd & 6th) in last years draft and turned that into Tyler Parsons and Matthew Phillips. Then losing out on 2 picks this year isn't that big of a deal.

If you're going to do that then it would make more sense to package that 5th year in there too, no? Ultra amazing.
