It actually was offside.
It is totally legal to carry the puck in backwards, if you have full possession of the puck. However, if you lift your stick off the puck while doing so, it's offside.
The EXACT same thing happened to the Flames a year or two ago - can't remember who it was but he had full possession, went in backwards, lifted his stick momentarily, then took the puck in and the Flames scored. Disallowed.

That's the best I have seen a team defend on a 5 on 3 in a long time. Granted its against a garbage coyotes team... but still that was a thing of beauty.

You can tell Elliott is really beating himself up right now. The guy is really fighting the puck and his whole body language looks like he just has no answers. Hopefully he can find his confidence again soon.
