Plus with a new coach, the idea is to improve on weakness from the season before. Sure it's the beginning of a new season but the PP looks worse than last season. The team motor in general is shockingly low.
But ultimately it comes down to your best players being your best players. And that's certainly not the case. Johnny and Sean are playing nowhere near the degree they've showcase over the past few seasons.

the difference right now for Calgary is that their defence is not producing at the ungodly rate they did the previous 3 seasons.
Monahan and Gaudreau aren't playing well right now but they have an anchor out there with them each shift because the team is paying 9 million dollars to smid and wideman to not play.
The Flames only added goaltending in the offseason. Versteeg and chiasson don't nulify the loss of Hudler and Colborne. That's a significant downgrade in skill right there. Brouwer is great, love what he brings, but he's on a bit of an island. Tkachuk isn't good enough for the NHL but he's good enough to make the Flames. Wideman is another year older and worse as predicted, Giordano is now 33 and while i am optimistic, I don't think he'll ever score 20 goals in this league again. Jokipakka is one of my favourites but he's not as good as Russell right now, so having him in the top 4 instead of russell is a downgrade, especially offensively.
Goaltending is better but everything else is worse.
