Wow. I did not see this coming. I thought if Oilers is going to trade one of their young guys it would be Eberle, Yakupov or RNH. I sure hope Chiarelli streak in losing on trades continues. I don't know much about Larsson but I think Taylor Hall will get better in New Jersey. He's got some veteran players to guide him over there and he might learn to play two-way hockey.
Now that Taylor Hall is out of Edmonton, I guess the Hall family will start going back to hating the Oilers and back cheering for the Flames.

If anything this will make it Chrystal clear that the Oilers are Connor McDavid bus to drive. They will be a better team going forward.

My point was that put him on a weaker blue line, on one of the worst defensive teams in the league, and with a downgrade in goal behind him... and it remains to be seen how much that effects him as a developing 23 year old.

I have been saying that the Oilers need to make a bad trade in an effort to balance out their team and get better. Didn't think they would actually do it.
This is a bad trade. Any way you slice it, it was poor value for Edmonton.
With that being said, Taylor Hall is also a 'problem' for Edmonton - we as Calgary fans have seen it for a long time. I would expect they trade away Eberle soon as well, as I think he was a worse player than Hall, and just as much a problem for Edmonton.
I like Larsson. I would hope that the Flames acquired him. I think he would be exceptionally strong next to Hamilton this year, and he absolutely has top pairing potential. Yes, Larsson was playing top pairing in NJ, but NJ sucks. It was admirable that he was keeping his head above water - really shows there is upside to him - but a top-pairing defencemen TODAY he is not. I don't care what HERO charts tell you - he is not any more of a top-pairing guy today than Justin Shultz is, or even just as laughably - Davidson is for the Oilers (seriously, Davidson is bottom-pairing guy, and nothing more).
I think this is a good proverbial win for both teams in the long run - Oilers would NOT get better as long as Hall was in the picture. He needed to be removed out of the equation. Getting a bag of peanuts would have been a win. Adding Larsson - a guy who is a decent defencemen at his age is a huge bonus.
New Jersey wins big time. They will absorb Hall's 'issues' well, and I bet Hall becomes a better player in time.
Looking at straight-up value - it was downright embarrassing for the Oilers. However, they just needed to do it. Any way you slice it, Hall was an issue that would always block Edmonton from taking a step forward. This was also a huge shot across the bow for the rest of the Oilers' forwards. Losing will not be tolerated, and if you are perceived as being part of the problem, you will be traded away.
If I was Draisaitl, Puljujarvi and especially McDavid... I would immediately make myself a cancer to the team to get my butt out of there as fast as possible!
Edit: Forgot to add: Though I think Larsson has a really good ceiling - a definite #1 - he has only barely been holding his head above water for a very short time in NJ on the top pair. If the Oilers don't find a partner for him - an experienced #1 guy - I think Larsson will regress, and this trade will look sillier every year. I don't think the Oilers will find that player, and thus I agree with the sentiment that Adam Larsson is the biggest loser in all of this. Not only does he have to play in Edmonton, but he is almost assuredly going to see his career tank.

Peter Chiarelli: This is the price you have to pay for good young defencemen in this league," unless your name is Brad Treliving, then it is just 3 draft picks.
LMAO!!!!

This was a huge overpayment but a necessary move.
I think that what they lose offensively will not be recovered defensively. They need to move more now for defence in order for a turn around and based on their draft pick they still don't have a balanced team build approach unless they flip a more recent asset for more defence.
Oils still have so many assets which are no longer valued where they once were. They will have to cleanup in short order with all these contracts coming down the pipe.
Also, it will be extremely fascinating to watch Hall play on a team outside the Oil system. I think, like most Oil ex-pats, that he will be more successful. Maybe if Hall performs well, it will cause further interest in more of the Island of Misfit Toys.

This. 100% this.
However, I still maintain that Sutter could have done much, much better out of that trade than he did.
Chiarelli could have done much, much better out of this trade.

It's so funny to see Oilers Sportsnet reporters toeing the Company line. Lol. It's ridiculous.

I can't believe they couldn't even get a 3rd or 4th round draft pick thrown in. I know Oiler fans overvalue their #1's but this is just a horrible return.

I don't see why everyone is bashing Chi for this trade, he didn't do this, Katz did this for his kid. He didn't like not getting to go up on stage first at the draft, so wants to ensure that he gets to do it again next year.

Maybe Larsson got so little PP time because he sucks offensively?

Surprised with that too. When you have the other guy over a barrel, it shows you just need to stick to your guns. Oilers wanted a young defenseman and this is all there was out there. Great trade for Jersey but still replacing Larsson won't be easy.
Can't believe Oilers could it have landed Jones or Subban somehow.

So they did this because Lucic is going to sign with the oil...I'd love for him to sign somewhere else just to screw them over and then have them go out and over pay for a different UFA.
Trading Hall was addition by subtraction culture wise but they now have even less skill. I'm excited to see what they're stuck doing with the other wunder kids and I'm eager to see how the new ones screw things up lol.

I wonder if there's any chance that Ference whispered in Lucic's ear about the Oilers' room being run by the Golden Boys, and warned against signing with a team led by Hall? If Lucic heeds the warning, he could have agreed to sign, but only if Chia moved Hall.
Something like that may be one reason why this deal seemed to come out of nowhere and catch even other GMs off guard. If Lucic made it a condition of signing, Chia had to act quickly.
Even if there's no truth to that, we should try to start the rumour that this is how it went down.

I get the addition by subtraction and the need to have a more balanced roster but this is terrible value for a guy like Hall. Based on Chiarelli's press conference it sounded like he was forced into it.

I don't find it hard to believe no team in the league would trade a top-pairing d-man for Hall. In the NHL today genuine top-pairing D > top-line winger. Clearly Montreal wanted more back for Subban than Hall. The market value for Hall just wasn't there.

They've acquired the wrong new jersey defenceman twice, Greene is the guy in the Fayne and Larsson pairings.

To be fair if the oilers gave up Draft picks it would be Taylor Hall plus 2 seconds
