I thought Smith picked up his speed after the first 10 minutes...he was average through the rest of the game.
His foot speed didn't take him out of the play.

Strong backcheck, then retrieves the puck after a missed shot, makes a good pass that drew two defenders to one guy, and then dirty mitts to pot the goal.

Janko. By far the best player today. Poirier was good as well. Those two were a cut above everyone else.
Thanks for all your work CG
I admittedly knows nothing about Jankowski other then what I read on CP and limited video, but on one side I see crappy stats and some people (not valid?) disappointing... on the other, I read about the depth he was buried under, his FF play, and short videos of really nice skill. Interesting to put things into perspective, given his age and everything - I guess if he was drafted a year later, what are yours (or anyone elses) thoughts - would he be a 1st round pick in Poirer/Klimchuk's draft year and range?
I'll admit that I wondered if we should just let him re-enter the draft and take the 2nd round pick, but now what I see and read I'm kind of excited, he sounds like he could be a top 6 guy. A top 6 of Gaudreau, Monahan, Poirer, Bennett and Jankowski would be pretty cool. Hopefully Kilmchuk and maybe even Shore (?) can round out that top 6, sans various other player movement through trades, draftings, signings and surprises.

It's great that Jankowski is getting a bit of love around here. His big frame, silky mits & awareness out there remind me of Nieuwy in a lot of ways. I doubt he'll be a 50 goal scorer like big Joe, but I still think he has the potential to be a top 6 C.
I hope he goes back to Providence and spends the year as 'The Man' there. He should be their best player and #1 C, and with a bit of help from his supporting cast he could put up some numbers which might finally put the hacks and haters to rest.

Really happy to see jankowski look great out there. Hope he has a dominant year in the NCAA and then signs with the flames at the end of the season just in time for playoffs.
I would really hate for all this patience and development to be lost for the flames if he chooses to become a free agent next summer. He would look great on this team as a top six player or even as a strong 3rd line center... Similar to how Jordan staal was for the penguins a few years ago. If he keeps progressing like he has we will no doubt be on a gaudreau-style contract watch next year. Conroy will have to hop on the private jet and go get the deal done.
I'm always concerned kids like this have advisers/agents in their ear during that time who are telling them the surest way to getting onto an NHL roster and making NHL money is to go to free agency and pick a team that doesn't have much forward depth... Especially at center. I hope his loyalty lies with the team that took a big chance on him with their first round pick and he signs with the flames. I think he will but it always makes me nervous with college players cause it's becoming more and more common for them to move on looking for a better chance to make the NHL.

Amazing how a couple of years ago if you could fog a mirror you had a legit chance of cracking the Flames lineup - now you will need to beat out some seasoned NHL talent to crack this lineup. It has come full circle in a couple of years.
Last year at this time his most vocal supporters were calling him the next Joel Otto for his defensive work. It will be interesting to see where he fits in as earlier he didn't show any signs of being a physical player and his defensive play was largely a product of good positioning. Adding some muscle seems to have given him some confidence to protect the puck and win some puck battles.
