I think people forget that the Red mile Didn't really start till we won rd 2 back in 04. The win in gm 7 vs the nucks saw about as many people as there were after this year's gm 4 win. There's no doubt that this year has the potential to be much bigger and ofcourse Calgary's population has probably increased by 20% too.
I think this talk about moving the red mile is nonsense. 8th avenue can't handle that many people. The avenue is way too narrow and they don't have the seating capacity that there is on 17th ave. The cops would have no ability to control a crowd there.

I think they should be trying to set up ways for people to do something other than stand around on the road. Get some temporary stages, bands, beer tents, outdoor food etc.

Don't try and control the red mile, just let the red mile be the red mile.
As for the women thing, I agree it's not good to harass or ask women to do anything against there will.
If I remember it was pretty clean in 04. Could definitely be worse.....

Harassment is a crime against a person. Crimes against persons are worse than crimes against property 100 times out of 100.

Debatable. Many of the stores looted in any riot never manage to reopen, or go out of business after reopening due to lack of business continuity. Not to mention all the businesses that are under-insured. Losing their business probably has a lot more sever affect on their lives and their families lives than being harassed or even assaulted. Speaking as a small business owner, I would rather be personally harassed than have my store burned or looted.

MODS>> I think that the title for this thread needs to be changed. I enjoy the debates in this thread and reading about what's happening on the red mile. I attend after most games. But the 'cans for Monahan' is sexist and offensive and should not be in s thread title. Please edit to a more begnin red mile title.

Well the Tilted Kilt is closed so maybe something decent will open there.

No one is going to gather in a mandated spot where everything is controlled and profits are set to be made. There's certainly enough of the 8 dollar cans of Canadian type venues around this city the rest of the year.

Lilac Fest is organized on 4st ave once a year on Sunday. Surely it would be as easy to do on 17th for each Flames game. Hell, just move the red mile to 4th st.

Some people need to do some traveling and see what a real unsafe celebratory environment is like before they get up in arms over a few idiots that make headlines here because there's nothing else going on. Anytime I've seen anything that even comes close to crossing the line in this city, the general public is almost always aware of it and puts a stop to it.

It would be a classy move if the City perhaps along with the Flames would set up a giant outdoor Jumbo screen to show the home and away games for free.
We are fortunate to go to the home games but i am 100% positive thousands of fans would love to view the games outdoors like what Toronto did for the Raptor fans and did for the Leafs last time they made the playoffs vs Boston.

Look at this guy and his naivety regarding large-scale event planning involving road closures, permitting (and logistics of meeting minimum standards), coordinated vendors, ground disturbance, etc etc.
There are no laws related to "spontaneous" crowds that aren't already covered in the Criminal Code, however an organized event is a whooooooole other thing.

So uh, maybe I'm crazy, but isn't your second point entirely reliant on your first objection?
