Anywho, like some posters here, $6.5 AAV sounds pretty steep to me for a guy coming off an entry level contract. Also, it's going to take franchise money to keep ROR after two years.
High risk, maybe high reward.
I think I would be more pumped if it was the other young Colorado forward - Duchene.
But at least Feaster is pulling some strings and the ball's now in Col's court.

Rounded down so = $0.00.

also even if the pick is in the lottery, with the new system, murphy's law dictates that if the Avs don't match and keep the 1st that the 1st is winning the lottery

Remember when you mentioned how my posts have sagged with constant sarcasm last year? I've been getting that annoying vibe from you lately.
I was talking more about shipping out Iginla, Bouwmeester etc if we're not in a playoff stop, which I don't think adding O'Reily puts us in either but is a good step forward.

They already lost their 2012 7th round pick.
That works right?

but this is no different than what Edmonton did to Penner, which a lot of people here then complained here rightfully so set the standard for RFA deals which caused a bunch of inflated bloated contracts
|
It is, for several reasons. Number one being he's a centre not a winger. Number two, they have a season and a half if liability if he busts. Number three, since everyone is terrified of trading in division anyway in hockey, it's not liken they really harmed themselves by damaging a relationship.
The oilers offer sheets were the result of Lowe realizing he needed to do SOMETHING to offset losing Pronger, and this is the result of Feaster accepting that the only way this team will ever contend is with strength down the middle.

Would would he sign here? Maybe because he learns to like the team, knows he'll be given every opportunity on the top line? We already know he chose the Flames over the Canucks. Why wouldn't he do it again?
He won't realistically be asking for $6.5M in 2 years unless he comes in and puts up 70 points next season. Personally, I'd love if he did that.
And well, if he won't sign to reasonable terms, the Flames can trade him to a team he wants to sign with, and the Flames will get a huge return.
This is a brilliant move by Feaster.
|
Maybe I am missing something, but the way it would work is like this:
1) The Flames have to offer him 6.5 million dollars to retain his services
2) O`Reilly can either sign for 6.5 million or hold out
3) If he holds out the Flames can trade him to a team willing to sign him for 6.5 million dollars a year
4) The Flames need to find a team willing to trade assets for a 6.5 million dollar O`Reilly
As for why O`Reilly would not sign for less than 6.5 million dollars there are a number of reasons:
1) He is guaranteed to make 6.5 million dollars a year on one year contracts for the next two years after this contract expires or he becomes a UFA able to sign anywhere;
2) One would assume that whatever offer lower than 6.5 million that the Flames table would likely be available if he went UFA. There is very low risk for him to enter UFA;
3) If he becomes a UFA he may sign for higher than what the Flames offered him prior to becoming a UFA
Why would he sign for less than he is guaranteed to get as a QO unless he is just a good guy?

He is overpaid at 5 million but not outrageously. It is a gamble but Feaster is staying true to his word not to rebuild. I don't think Colorado will match since it has dragged on this long without an agreement. Flames will have to give up a first rounder and a 3rd.
This is a great draft year esp in the top ten. That would be bad gamble if the Flames ended up in the 26 spot of the standings and a chance for a lottery pick but...

If the Flames are looking like they are out of it by the trade deadline should be easier to unload something for decent picks. If they are in contention for a spot then our 1st has less value. I think this helps reduce the risk overall of the move, strategies open up for the Flames whichever way the standings look.

This "win now" mentality sure is pervasive.
In a year the Flames were looking like picking high in a very strong draft, this tells you all you need to know about how important the Flames think the playoffs are.
Maybe more worrisome than possibly giving up a high pick is the likelihood that this means no fire sale at the trade deadline, and no critical new assets then either. They could very well end up holding on to all their tradeable commodities, trying hard for the playoffs, missing by a few spots, and giving up a top ten pick in a solid draft.
In fact, that seems the most likely outcome if this goes through.

You're 1/2. Icon said he was more proven than an unknown draft pick. He did not say he was proven as a top player.
So really, you are using the statement of one person to judge "everyone".

Notable Centres around 55 points in their 20-year old season:
Joe Thornton: 60
Jason Spezza: 55
Ryan O'Reilly: 55
Vincent Lecavalier: 51
Jordan Staal: 49

I think it's pretty clear you know very little about O'Reilly and just reacted without knowing what you're talking about.
This was mentioned a few pages back:
Quote:
First, he played more than 2500 minutes through his first two seasons. Since 2000, there have been six other forwards to play that much as 18 and 19-year-olds and it's pretty good company: Sidney Crosby, Steven Stamkos, Ilya Kovalchuk, Jordan Staal, Jeff Skinner and Sam Gagner.
Secondly, since 2000, there have been 25 forwards (including O'Reilly) to record at least 50 points in their 20-year-old NHL season.
|
and on top of that, O'Reilly has three seasons under his belt at 22 years old, last year putting up 50+ points, leading the league in take-aways, and was 54% in faceoffs.
You'd be better served going back to whining about how you feel a re-build isn't happening than continuing to show you don't really understand what's going on here with this particular move.

He better be the savour of this team, or else losing those picks will hurt really really bad.

I just about crashed my truck on way home when i heard on 960 that the Flames that O'Reilly has signed a offer sheet from the Flames.
Holy Jeebus if COL does not match by next Thursday and Feaster can pulls this off...what a major coup of a move for the Flames.
Outstanding news!!!

Most likely he didn't. There are 7 teams below the Flames today. Backlund and Kipper coming back should improve the team. Why does everyone think it would be a top 5. Also, if Ryan O'Reilly entered this draft today he would be a top 5 pick. What a silly argument some of the people are making, the real question is whether it is too much $$$ not if we gave up too much.
