“Why does one person get to decide what more than 200 of us do?” Davis said. “It’s obvious (the student) is in the minority, yet the rest of us are being denied to pray to our God.”
I guess passing Civics class isn't a graduation requirement at Balstrop High.
Principal Stacey Pullen said earlier in the day that additional security officers were requested because of the outcry by atheists from across the country who sided with the student who filed the protest.
Yes, Principal Pullen, it was the atheists who necessitated the extra security. It certainly wasn't the other students and townsfolk who were threatening Damon with violence and death. No ma'am, that would be downright un-Christian.
I love how the student begins her speech with "I respect the beliefs of other people," before starting the prayer. That's pretty much the same as saying, "I'm not racist, but..." and then saying something incredibly racist.

Being right and knowing everyone else is wrong is a basic tenet of belief based religions. God's ways are higher than man's ways, laws (and apparently even common decency) don't apply when someone gets in the way of what's wanted.

My favourite part was the women yelling out "1st Amendment rights!" at the start of the prayer. I half expected one of the Hanson Brothers to shift into frame yelling "I'm listening to the #####ing prayer!!"
“I’m wondering why,” said Kari Payton, class valedictorian. “This is something that’s been done for years - forever - and now that we’re graduating we can’t show reverence and honor to our God?”
Well Kari, feeding Christians to the lions was done for years too. Perhaps you'd like to be the first one to play with Simba?

I thought they usually picked the best and brightest student to be valedictorian? If they had to pick someone who is so stupid that she can't even figure out why the school can't throw prayers into the graduation ceremony then it must be a pretty dense student population.
And it's not one student deciding what they do. It's the US Constitution. But I bet that only means something to them when they want to keep their AK47 under their pillows at night.

I watch that video and just shake my head...how anyone can find that 20 seconds of people talking "stressing" is beyond me.
Honestly...what in this can be so offensive as to cause this kid to go to the lengths he did and suffer the wrath he has suffered?
Quote:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy Kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory. for ever and ever. Amen
I mean really....what's there?
Serious question. ( And no he wasnt doing this only because it is against the constitution as he clearly stated in his very first reddit post about this whole thing)

My reasoning behind it is that it's emotionally stressing on anyone who isn't Christian.

It's not the words themselves that are stressing or offensive. It's the feeling of living in a community and attending a school where you're made to feel like an outsider. It's the fact that the most visible employees of the supposedly secular government in this kid's life -- the faculty and administration of his school -- do not abide by the law and respect his right to freedom of/from religion and conscience.
You may shake those things off as trivial and nothing to get upset about, but you're not Damon. And fortunately for him, the Supreme Court sides with his views, not yours.
Wow the Valedictorian has already been mocked for her wieght and supposed stupidity. I can see where atheist boy gets his bitterness from.
I know, right? Can you imagine if she had a physical disability and people here mocked her for that? How angry and bitter and insensitive would posters on this forum be if they were to do such a thing?

Well if I was a graduating student in that class I would be offended by having to listen to a prayer I don't believe in.
I'd understand if they did a moment of silence where people can pray to whatever god they want, but they subjected the crowd to their god and only their god.

By only recognizing one spiritual path in the ceremony, they were diminishing all others, including atheism. That is inherently prejudicial.
And from the way the "inbred hicks" in the town reacted, it clearly shows that his cause for concern was just. The way the town folk have persecuted this kid is shameful.
