British Airways has delayed their 787 service to YYC again, now scheduled to start August 19th (it was August 11th previous to this and a date in July before that).

So the new runway is causing noise complaints from people under the new flight paths.
http://globalnews.ca/news/1431333/ro...ary-residents/
My uncle lives in Rundle and was complaining to me today about the noise. He was in his back yard on the phone, and the jets would drown him out as they flew over.

Yeah it's kind of unfortunate, in south flow departures off the new runway bank away from the airport and go right over Rundle, unlike north arrivals which go right over Sunridge Mall. That said, he lives about the same distance as I lived off the end of runway 29... to say it drowns you out is a bit of an exaggeration. Panorama and Castleridge/Falconridge have dealt with it forever. Life will go on for Rundle, and lucky for them it's only in south flow anyway.
"Every 5 minutes, huge aircraft.... 767's landing in and SCREAMING!"
I had to stop watching it after that. Sorry. I hope that guy's not your uncle.

Wasn't there a long consultation process before they built the runway? Seem to remember open houses that showed the runway location and flight paths. This shouldn't be a shock.

Correct. Nothing says duhhh more than the very first thing the reporter says.
"He moved near the airport 30 years ago, but didn't sign up for this."
Yes you did. It's exactly what you signed up for.
This is just like the Stoney Trail SE debacle when Cranston residents realized their access to the new freeway has been restricted for the sake of efficiency, and launched complaints just as the road was opening... despite the plans for the road being pretty much unchanged from those published in the mid 90's.

The aforementioned turn planes make after departing the new runway. Only slight, but enough to take them over Rundle and "rattle" that dude's house. But hey... it's so they don't hit planes coming off the old runway. So would he rather noise, or pieces of shattered airplane raining down?

Wait, you even included the taxi path in white? Now that's detail.

Plus, residences in Temple and Monterey Park have been dealing with planes landing or taking off right above them forever. It's what you get when you live near the flight path of a runway. Deal with it.

Not me. That's the track transmitted by GPS of an Air Canada flight this afternoon from this site.

What makes the Southview/Rundle complaints look even worse is that the airport has decided that Castleridge/Falconridge/Temple/Monterey Park should still get the noise in the middle of the night, to save Southview and Rundle from it. After 11 pm arrivals will generally come over Castleridge unless there's an uncharacteristically strong wind prohibiting it.

I was wondering why planes were still using that runway late at night. I wonder if YYC is just saving time using the new runway at night till the new flight path residents clam down and get use to the noise.

New runway is kind of an unnecessarily long taxi to the WestJet gates if the airport isn't busy, and to land southbound you have to fly further if coming from the south. Both are big factors. The published noise procedures show south arrivals coming over Airdrie on the old and new runways as #1 and #2 choices for after 11 pm, with runway 29 (over Castleridge) as #3... so we'll have to see how it shakes out. They haven't really been going by the published procedures as of now, it seems.

My parents mentioned that they heard the planes a bit more due to the flight path...wonder if people in the hospital hear/feel anything, since it is almost right under that path.

No, that's not my uncle. And I wasn't exaggerating, I couldn't make out what he was saying as the planes went overhead, but that could be because of his crappy phone.

Sorry, I misread your post and thought you meant he said it drowns out normal conversation when a plane goes overhead. It absolutely would over the phone. Didn't mean to be rude.

Hmm, just how many years has the parallel been on the books? I'm thinking well over the 30 years mentioned by that one resident in the report.
Case closed, wrap 'er up. Nothing to see here.
Edit: Earliest mention I can find was 1979. At least since that date development around the airport (and the future runway) was done in accordance with noise regulations/footprints. Not too mention aircraft have gotten a heck of a lot quieter since then too.

When my flight from ORD was descending on Sunday I thought it was pretty cool that I could now see my house in Rundle on the approach. Later that evening I learnt that it was not so cool. However, I'm pretty sure the new runway was planned before my house so I can't have any valid complaints.
While YCC may have had some Open Houses, I can't recall any taking place in Rundle. A mail-out would have been nice but it may have been too expensive as well.

One of my favorite things to do at my aunt's place in Surrey was watch the planes fly over her house as they approached YVR. The sound was awesome, and she said she never even noticed the noise anymore. These people just need to wait more than a week before complaining.
